Book Description

0815339046 978-0815339045 June 7, 2002 1
The book explores the identity and context of the Scyld and Scef characters in Anglo-Saxon mythology. Its focus on heroic forerunners to Beowulf offers a fuller appreciation not just of that later myth but also of the medieval Germanic world. All references are presented in the original language and in translation for easy, comprehensive access.

5.0 out of 5 stars Founding Fathers of North Sea Culture, June 8, 2010
By
This review is from: Scyld and Scef: Expanding the Analogues (Hardcover)
If an entire library was on fire, and I could only grab three or four books, out of hundreds to choose from, this would be one of them.

Why:
1) If you're interested in the origin accounts of North Sea Culture (fx. Anglo-Scandinavia), I can't recommend a better place to start.
2) It provides the medieval accounts (dozens) that attest to Scyld/Skjold/Shield - in both the original language and in English.
3) It especially provides thorough, meaningful analysis of each subculture's testimony about Scyld.

Page-for-page, it's the most expensive book I've ever purchased.
But based on value, for what I look for in history, it was a screaming bargain.
It is irreplaceable. For future generations, *please* keep this book in print.
(I have zero connection or association with either the author or the publisher...other than buying/reading a copy of the book)
