Founding Fathers of North Sea Culture,
By Hagoth7 (in flux) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scyld and Scef: Expanding the Analogues (Hardcover)
If an entire library was on fire, and I could only grab three or four books, out of hundreds to choose from, this would be one of them.
Why: 1) If you're interested in the origin accounts of North Sea Culture (fx. Anglo-Scandinavia), I can't recommend a better place to start. 2) It provides the medieval accounts (dozens) that attest to Scyld/Skjold/Shield - in both the original language and in English. 3) It especially provides thorough, meaningful analysis of each subculture's testimony about Scyld. Page-for-page, it's the most expensive book I've ever purchased. But based on value, for what I look for in history, it was a screaming bargain. It is irreplaceable. For future generations, *please* keep this book in print. (I have zero connection or association with either the author or the publisher...other than buying/reading a copy of the book) |
