It is very quiet.

I spent a long time researching and sifting through the various models that would fit in my case and this looked like the best for me.

It does fit inside my HTPC's low profile case though.

I purchased this to cool an AMD A10 5600K mounted on an ASRock FM2A85X-ITX Mini ITX FM2. The build is a mini ITX budget gaming box for my son that I kind of cobbled together (my 2nd build). The Scythe was probably the best decision I made of all the parts I bought.

I had originally purchased the Cooler Master Geminii M4 but was unable to mount it properly due to the position of chips on the back of the motherboard and the provided Cooler Master backplate. I tried modifying the mount but could never get decent temps with the Cooler Master. The stock fan worked but was super loud. I ordered the Scythe after poring over forums in search of a compatible aftermarket cooler. This cooler also uses a backplate but there is padding in place which keeps it from pressing against the chips. I mounted the cooler a few months ago and my temps were 5-10C cooler and I didn't have to hear the jet engine when the CPU was under load. Haven't had any temp or noise issues since.

Fits in a Silverstone Ml03b just fine. Cools a hot c2quad Q9650 to 40c idling and keeps it at 64c at 1400rpm...59c ish at full 2100rpm...which is noisy by the way...but it never reaches that speed in my setup.

This was purchased for a XBMCbuntu HTPC to reduce the noise from the stock Intel hsf, which at full load kept bridging 80c, idled at 50c and @2000rpm was very loud.

Very impressed with the heat dissipation capabilities and the zero noise factor at HTPC duties. My psu is louder than this thing. Also, the fan runs at 600rpm and keeps the proc at 50c... In other words its Inaudible unless you put your face 1ft away from it.

To put it Into perspective my ps3 is louder than my htpc now that I've installed this hsf and replaced my psu fan with a Swiftec Helix.

Pros:
- Superior heat dissipation in tight, low airflow environments, which in my case, my htpc case has Zero case fans. Even the psu does not extract heat from the case. MY Silverstone ml03b runs no casefans with this hsf.
- Low speed half height fan is very quiet.
- sturdy mounting system
- extreme low height

Cons:
- Instructions could be better, but still an easy install...mobo has to be out of the case though.
- I must have missed the boat, bc these are no longer available from typical overclocking and PC enthusiast vendors anymore. I'm actually going to buy another one now, just in case I need it for another build.

Other thoughts:
- Don't overclock with this thing or put it on a higher watt CPU. It's not designed for OCing. My workstation runs on water, now that's for OCing...this is for low noise, low heat HTPC applications.

Finding a good heat sink that will fit in a thin HTPC case like a Lian Li PC-C37 (3.7" tall) is challenging!

But this little cooler does the trick! At full speed the fan is noticeable (but not awful). The fan is PWM, so any modern motherboard will run it at very low speed (~300-400 rpm) for almost all use with an i3-2100 CPU (if the BIOS is set-up properly). Even running OCCT for an extended period only slightly increases the fan speed, although this cooler would easily be overwhelmed by an overclocked i7-2600K running full-bore!!

For my installation, this is the only fan in the entire system (Seasonic X400 fanless power supply). The result is a nearly silent (to my ears) HTPC. The slow SATA HDDs are basically the only noise sources, and only audible when seeking.

Installation is non-trivial, requiring simultaneous access to both sides of the board. The included directions are very poor, with no simple cross-reference to the labels of various parts mentioned in the written steps. Fortunately the diagrams are reasonably clear, so I was able to eventually figure everything out, and subsequent installations will be very easy (but always will require simultaneous access to both sides of the board).

As of February 2012, unlike the description on Amazon's site (and also on Scythe's site!), the *ONLY* change for "Rev B" is Socket LGA2011 compatibility. The fins, heat-pipe count (5) and fan are identical. Scythe has simply updated the mounting kit.

I built into the Silverstone GD05 HTPC Case. Because of height restrictions, fan options were limited. After extensive research I settled on this particular fan.

This fan works just fine. My CPU temperatures are great, even though it's sometimes warm in this upstairs office. I installed it on top of an Intel 3570k and have had no issues whatsoever in the six months my system has been running.

Regarding RAM clearance. Full-height G.Skill Ripjaws fit in banks 2 and 4. If you plan to use banks 1 & 3 go with low profile memory. Overheating should not be a problem.

For installation, I recommend looking at videos on Youtube. This was my first build and it went smooth.

I wanted to replace my stock cooler that came with my intel i3-4150. It was small and got around 70C when pushed by games, and was somewhat loud at 1500rpm. With it reduced to 1000rpm, I could get 40C temps on normal desktop stuff however, with an almost inaudible 1000rpm. Even though the zalman CNPS8900 cooler won a Tom's Hardware award, they are a poor review site for coolers without the proper measurements and expertise. There were also mixed reviews, especially about the quietness of the fan. I was stupid and bought it because it seemed popular enough, was a low height non-tower cooler that was relativvely inexpensive, and thought that all fans were created equal when it came to sound by reducing RPM. Boy was I wrong.

The other reviews have already gone over quite extensively the hassle of installing this cooler. I'll add on that it is okay to install on an ITX mobo, specifically a Gigabyte H97N-WIFI, but you need low profile RAM (in other words they are short with minimal heatspreaders), and you can only position the cooler with the heatpipes parallel to the RAM (for some reason the manual says its less efficient cooling this way) as otherwise the pipes would push against the first RAM slot. If you have an ITX mobo, check to make sure it looks like the H97N. Those mobos with an extra PCIe 1x slot at the bottom (which is kind of pointless since most good video cards will block it with two-slot coolers anyway) this cooler will probably block your 16x slot for the video card since it's higher up. If the slot is just along the bottom and by its lonesome, however, it should work without issue.

Now lets talk about the cooler performance itself. Although temps were a little better than the stock cooler, they weren't amazingly better.
