Editorial Reviews

Mr. Lazaro’s fashion house is on the verge of bankruptcy, mainly because of his partner Facundo, whose overweight wife scares away much of their business by modeling their designs. To make matters worse, Lazaro’s son Raúl constantly needs money to indulge the whims of his beautiful fiancé. Once he learns of his father’s predicament, however, Raúl helps out by asking his fiancé to organize a fashion show and be one of the models. Though Lazaro’s business improves dramatically, he’s still in the red. Discouraged, he decides to liquidate his stock and give up. When all seems lost, modeling students Rosita and Laura come to the assistance of the Lazaros to help them create some new and entertaining ideas for saving their business.

3.0 out of 5 stars DECENT CAST WASTED IN BAD FILM, May 27, 2008
This review is from: Se Solicitan Modelos (DVD)
First, let me get one thing out of the way: I have granted three stars to this inane film out of respect for Sarita Montiel, Domingo Soler, Amparito Arozamena and other members of the cast all of whom deserve so much better!

That said there's not much left to comment about this lousy Mexican tamale except to wonder what motivated its writing and production. The plot is preposterous, direction non-existing and the casting totally out of whack. Can you imagine Sarita Montiel as a prime and proper secretary? Sure later on she becomes a high fashion model but she looks uncomfortable both as a secretary and as a model. At the end she sings one pretty bolero and that's about the only redeeming moment in the whole pic but...is it worthy to sit through 90 minutes of boring mayhem?

By the same token, can you conceive "Clavillazo" as the manager of a haute couture establishment? Give me a break! Meanwhile Mr. Soler, who has given Mexican cinema some of its most glorious moments, looks here totally like a fish out of water. In addition, you will witness a parade of the most horrible 50s wardrobe, make-up and hairdoos. Production design? Straight out of an Ed Wood epic!

In reference to this DVD edition just expect the usual no frills type of deal which is common to all Mexican films from the "golden era." No restoration, no subtitles, no extras. Just consider yourself lucky that they used a decent master for the transfer to DVD the only good thing I can say about this product.
