Disappointing,
By N. Durham "Big Evil" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

David Fincher's Seven was undoubtadly one of the most unnerving mainstream films of recent memory, and after hearing the great, moody music from the film, I tracked down the soundtrack and was very disappointed. First off, Howard Shore's orchestral scores are more than worth hearing and capture the depressed feel of the film, but the remix of "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails (which played during the opening credits) and David Bowie's "The Heart's Filthy Lesson" (which played during the closing credits) are not present here, which is very disheartening. Gravity Kills' one time hit "Guilty" is here, but other than that there isn't anything else worth hearing. If your a fan of the film and love the two songs I listed above, this is what to do. For the remix of "Closer" is available on the "Closer to God" CD single, and Bowie's song can be found on his "Outside" album. If your looking to buy this soundtrack for one or both those songs, beware, they are not here.

It's missing the opening and ending credits!,
This review is from: Se7en: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Nine Inch Nails: Closer (precursor)...from the Further Away/Closer to God CD-single. Featured in the film during the opening credits...best possible choice for the movie. David Bowie: The Heart's Filthy Lesson...from the Outside album. Featured in the end credits...best possible choice for the movie. Neither of these two songs are on the soundtrack CD...why not?! As good as the rest of the music is, without these two songs, how can you dare buy this album?!

DISAPPOINTED,
By A Customer
This review is from: Se7en: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I love all of the music in the film SE7EN. However, the soundtrack pissed me off. Three very cool songs are missing: Nine Inch Nails-Closer [Precursor], David Bowie-The Hearts Filthy Lesson, and Ren Klyce/Steve Boddecker-Lust. I would have killed for these to be on the soundtrack, but that would never happen. I give it a three-star because I like all of the music, but I wanted so much more.If anyone can find "Lust" for me on MP3 or CD, PLEASE E-MAIL ME!!!!!

Forget this soundtrack, get the score,
By Clark Gable (Miami, FL) - See all my reviews

While this soundtrack has some worthy songs (especially the Bach piece and the suite), it is completely lacking in actual music from the film. Anyone who has seen this great film knows that it has a great score by Howard Shore. Do yourself a favor, skip this one and go for the score disc, it contains 28 tracks and is running for almost an hour and a half. It contains every piece of score in the film and this is the REAL soundtrack. It's called "Se7en - The Expanded Soundtrack". Unfortunately it is very rare, I seriously doubt if you can find it in a retail shop and I know for a fact that no online shop sells it. I got it from a friend a couple of years ago and it has been one of my most valuable soundtracks to date. Do yourself some good and go look for this one, it's the soundtrack as it was meant to be.

Nothing Like The Movie,
By JR (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Se7en: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is a really strange soundtrack because it doesn't succeed in conveying the mood of the film at all. Quite a few of the tracks are upbeat, jazzy numbers and I have no idea where these were used in the movie. The fact that the NIN closer remix isn't here is annoying as it really does set the tone in the opening credits but I don't really care since I have that mix on the single anyway. The reason I bought this CD was for the Bach Air piece, which totally blew me away in the film and stuck in my head for ages. Basically I wanted to have that on CD without getting a whole Bach CD since I'm not into that kind of music generally....so I'm happy, even if this soundtrack as a whole is pretty slight. The score pieces are worthwhile and appropriately dark and I was pleasantly surprised by the Thelonius Monk contribution, since I've rarely listened to any jazz...All in all, there is some good stuff on here but it doesn't remind you of the movie at all, except for the Bach piece, which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.

Disappointing Drivel,
By A Customer
This review is from: Se7en: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
While some of the songs on the 'soundtrack' are ok, they do not capture the dark and violent feeling of the whole movie. Closer (Precursor) sets the mood, and things don't let up until Bowie's Filthy Lesson. Listening to this soundtrack, you would never know you were listening to one of the more disturbing movies of the 90's. This 'soundtrack' does not do the movie justice.

Good soundtrack but at the same time....,

I have to admit that while I like this soundtrack, there are some problems with it. On the positive side, you do get a good overall song selection, as well as two cuts of Howard Shore's score, which are great on their own. The problem with this soundtrack is that it leaves out songs from the film that absolutely should have been on the album, namely the remix of the Nine Inch Nails track "Closer" and "Heart's Filthy Lesson" by David Bowie. If you are thinking of ordering this looking for those two songs in particular, don't even bother. Personally, I would have appreciated it had they released Shore's complete score on its own but I'm guessing we'll see an "official" release on that end some day (apparently there's a bootleg of the original score floating around, which I have yet to find).
I think this disc is worth a listen. The music is all over the place in terms of genres and there are some good tracks in here but this isn't the end-all, be-all soundtrack that should have been released for the film.

This is what you want...this is what you DON'T get!,
By Patty Suzanne Carss (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews

I agree with all those above who were disappointed and chose not to purchase it. What's the deal? I was mortified that not even Bowie's great tune at the end credits isn't even there. Don't get me wrong, I love Billie Holiday and the rest of those old timers, some living and some no longer with us, but this is just [bad]. Forgive my blatantness but where could all of us maybe find the songs we want to hear from the movie??

If songs are missing from the CD, therefore, it is NOT the original motion picture soundtrack, therefore the public is being misled.
Three very cool songs are missing: Nine Inch Nails-Closer [Precursor], David Bowie-The Hearts Filthy Lesson, and Ren Klyce/Steve Boddecker-Lust. |
