About the Author
Lillian Beckwith (Lillian Comber) was born in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, in 1916. She went to live in the Hebrides before the Second World War and stayed there for nearly twenty years, living first on Elgol, Isle of Skye, and later on the nearby and smaller Isle of Soay. Her hilarious initiation into crofting life is captured in the heart warming book 'The Hills is Lonely'. She acquired her own cottage, and living and working on her own croft gave rise to a series of magical Hebridean books such as 'The Sea For Breakfast'. She retired to the Isle of Man, where she died in 2004.
Lillian Beckwith's twenty-year resi dence in the Hebrides and her know ledge of and fondness for the local families are very apparent in this book. Hannah Gordon's reading adds another wonderful dimension. Gordon captures the rough and hearty nature of the people's speech, as well as the sim plicity and humor of rural life in the Hebrides. We easily visualize the char acters' looks and their surround ings during the course of an island year. She uses Gaelic words and phrases with ease, offering listeners the benefit of correct pronunciation--how many of us would know "ceilidh" sounds like "kay-lee"? This program is a delight, with its humor and quotidian events presented so beautifully you'll find yourself smiling as you listen to it! D.M.W. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner.
