About the Author

Alex Kerstitch began exploring the Sea of Cortez in 1960, observing, photographing and studying the diverse marine life. His love for the sea was the beginning of a life goal of recording and learning about the unique environment of this body of water. After receiving his BFA in Commercial Design at the University of Arizona he continued his graduate training in Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology, and joined the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology as a research assistant in Marine Sciences. Combining his talent as an illustrator and photographer with his extensive diving experience, he illustrated and coauthored "Reef Fishes of the Sea of Cortez," as well as wrote numerous articles in both popular and scientific journals. An award winning photographer and talented illustrator, his work has been featured in many national and international publications. He was a Research Associate in Marine Sciences at the University of Arizona and taught high school marine biology in Tucson. Through teaching and his publications he strove to show others the richness of the Sea of Cortez. Tragically Dr. Kerstitch passed away in March of 2001.
