The Sea Eagle Explorer Kayak is ready for wet OR dry conditions with four extra-large easily convertible drains. Drains OPEN the craft bails itself in rough whitewater conditions. The Sea Eagle 420x Explorer inflatable kayak is as tough as nails and as rugged as the men and women who ride in it. A handy large kayak that holds two to three adults and up to 855 pounds, the 420x lets you rocket fearlessly down Class IV rapids, traverse miles of wilderness rivers to remote camping spots, or fly fish on trout streams that other fishermen can't access. Even better for travelers, the kayak deflates and stores in a handy carrying bag, so you easily haul it along on a small plane to impossibly obscure fishing or camping sites. There's no better kayak for true adventurers than the Sea Eagle 420x.

Unlike ordinary "dry-only" kayaks with no drains or "wet-only" kayaks with permanently open drains, the 420x offers four extra-large, easily convertible drains for both wet and dry conditions. When the drains are open, the craft bails itself in rough whitewater or ocean conditions. When the drains are closed, they won't let a drop of water in, keeping both you and your cargo comfortably dry in calm water. And even in the worst-case scenario--when your kayak is filled to the gunwales with water--the 420x still floats.

The 420x Explorer owes its durability to 1,000-denier, polyester-supported, high-pressure fabric with quadruple-thickness electronic-welded seams. How tough is the Explorer? In torture testing, Sea Eagle pounded it mercilessly with the claw of a claw hammer to no effect. Stabbing it with a screwdriver also had a negligible impact. The "crocodile hide" hull is so sturdy that it can stand up to almost any challenge, let alone a few bumps from the dock. Other details include integrated bow and stern spray skirts with water-deflecting guards; rope lacing that forms secure handholds and convenient tie-down points; two tall-back seats; two 8-foot double-ended paddles; an inflation pump; bow and stern storage bags; and a repair kit.

The 420x Explorer measures 168 by 37 inches (W x L) and weighs 54 pounds. It's also backed by a three-year warranty.

It also takes a beating like a champ.

All in all I'm happy, the kayak is the right size I was looking for, enough space for camping gear, and seems very durable.

The included foot pump is well made, and inflating the boat only takes a few minutes.

This item apparently ships directly from the manufacturer and there is no tracking number given, so there is some stress involved with wondering when it will arrive. But it came quickly in two boxes, one the Kayak and the other the Pro Package material, and all were in good shape. It unpacks easily and I quickly inflated and checked it out. There is plenty of room for two persons or a person and a dog, but with two people there is not much room for overnight gear. I took it out for a 4 hour float down the Rogue River with no problems. I scraped over quite a few rocks and gravel bars, and the bottom looks fine and seems quite durable. It is very hard to steer the kayak with river current and two people on board, it just wants to spin. I have ordered the stabilizer for the kayak which I hope will help with the steering. With the pro package you get some extras, including the pump and seats. The pump is quite nice, seems durable, high volume, and takes only a few minutes to pump up the kayak, and is easy to pack away on trips. The two seats that are included are the big disappointment, for me they are really cheap. By the end of the first trip on the river the straps were ripped out and the seat was useless. The other seat I sat in and could hear the stiches ripping everytime I moved. The other problem was the directions - they are the type of directions that are written by someone who has done it before but make no sense to someone who just wants to hook up the seats correctly for the first time. They are also not accurate, as I called up the factory to get some guidance and was told "that particular procedure isn't done anymore", that the particular seat mounting instruction was a leftover from a previous product and not applicable to this one.Read more ›

I love this kayak. I just took it down a class IV stretch of the Clackamas River and it handled perfectly. The boat was nearly full of water and it drained in seconds. The center of gravity is so low that I never feared being thrown out or flipping the kayak. It also takes a beating like a champ. It has taken full speed collissions into boulders and tree limbs and it doesn't even make a scuff.

I've also taken it upstream on calmer water and it was easy paddling while using the skeg. With the high-back seats I can go for hours in total comfort. This is the most versatile kayak on the market. There is even an attachable sail kit available. It comes with a 180 satisfaction guarentee. I am fully satisfied and happy I did my research.

I have a 2011 sea eagle 420x that I have owned for almost a year. It is a very strong boat and it is made of good quality. I was looking for a boat for white water (Upper and Middle New River in WV) and I was not happy with the high prices of NRS for their inflatable Kayaks.

I felt that the price for the 420x Pro Package with the carbon paddles and the Pro seats seemed a little more reasonable.

The good: The carbon paddles are well made. The air pump works well. The boat seems very sturdy and stable and I feel safe in it going through the rapids.

The bad: The 2011 model has only 4 self bailing holes and they are poorly positioned too high in the bow and stern. I have purchased additional hole kits from the manufacturer and I have added a number of holes to the bottom but when the drop stitch floor inflates it pushes down against the holes effectively closing them and keeping the boat three inches deep in water.

I see that the new model for 2012 (with the blue side walls) now has 16 self bailing drain holes and that they may have dealt with the problem. But I must point out that I had contacted the company multiple times and talked to their tech support.

The people at the company are very nice and tried to help, but I got the feeling that they just are not that informed about white water and the concept of trying to make the boat self bail better seemed over their head.

So, I would recommend the 420x for the strength and quality of the boat but due to the problems with the self bailing and follow up with the company without any help to deal with the problem, I would not recommend the boat if you are buying it for white water.

I purchased this kayak for portable tandem flat water paddling with my wife. Although I prefer higher performance rigid kayaks, the tandem models are too heavy for me to easily transport on my cars roof rack. The boat was shipped directly from the US distributor and arrived on schedule. Everything was packed nicely in 2 boxes. I was impressed with the overall quality of the boat and seats; but the paddles were just OK. Since I already own high quality carbon paddles, this wasn't an issue for me; but I would suggest upgrading to the carbon package to get the better paddles. Like other reviewers, I found the instructions a bit confusing, but quickly figured things out by a bit of trial and error. The included foot pump is well made, and inflating the boat only takes a few minutes. I don't think there is a need or much advantage to the portable electric pump options. On the water, the boat and seats are roomy and comfortable. The boat is slower than a rigid kayak this size, but extremely comfortable and stable. We even were able to stand up and simulate a stand up paddle board. Deflating and folding the boat into it's carrying case are also quick ad easy- about 10 minutes. Again, the instructions however, are minimal and confusing. We had to figure things out by trial and error. Overall, I gave the boat and package a 4 rating. Better paddles and clearer instructions would have earned a 5 from me.
