More About the Author

Josie Iselin is a photographer who has foregone the tradition of the camera; she uses her flatbed scanner exclusively to generate her stunning imagery. Iselin has created seven books on forms in nature, each more luscious in detail than the next. Beach Stones was the first, published in 2006 by Abrams, followed by Leaves & Pods and Seashells. A tiny book of Heart Stones came out for Valentine's Day, 2008. In Spring 2010, Beach: A Book of Treasure was published by Chronicle Books. As both writer and photographer, Iselin pushes deeper into what we find at the beach, both scientifically, personally and historically. The collaged imagery is spectacular, the text is lyrical and informative. The mix of science and artistry makes all these books provocative for both the visual explorer--those wanting to know more about the natural artifacts we find around us--and those concerned with where our planet is heading. Her sixth book, Sea Glass Hearts is a luscious gem of a book to match Heart Stones. Released in February 2012, it is full of sea glass imagery, with hearts to find on every page. Josie's newest book brings to light the beauty and science of seaweed. An Ocean Garden: The Secret Life of Seaweed was released by Abrams in March, 2014 and is Iselin's most substantial combination of art and science. The spectacular images of marine algae will knock your socks off while the accompanying essays lyrically combine the personal stake in our shores with the biology of seaweed: why it is so brilliantly colored, how fast it grows, and its essential qualities for our ocean's health and our own. A delight!

Josie Iselin lives on a steep hill in San Francisco with three chickens in her backyard.

I have searched for sea glass my entire life. Nothing gives me more joy than finding a book on sea glass that I can pour over for hours. Life is not easy for a lot of people right now. To find a book that allows you to escape to the beach, without actually being there...is a true gift. Josie's photography always blows my mind. She is the most creative and passionate photograper that I have ever come across. Her images always stop me in my tracks...so I can savor the view. I can feel that she loves the beach and the sea glass as much as I do....that comes through so clearly in her pictures.

So, do yourself a favor and order this book from Amazon right now. Give this out to all the people that you love. You are going to have hours of reading pleasure, all your friends and family will thank you, and you can also dream about the next project from Josie, (sea tile ?)...hopefully very soon.

Another truly gorgeous book from Josie for those of us in love with the beach and all its gifts. It makes me long for the summer and warm sand under my feet, and the possibility of finding treasures. I'm inspired all over again with her poetry of words and valentine of jewels!

If you aren't familiar with this author's work, she uses a process called Scannography and takes seemingly ordinary objects like stones and shells and transforms them into images, books, prints and collections that are uniquely beautiful.

Sea Glass Hearts is a collection of sea glass and stone images with some lovely poems and poetic phrases to accompany many of the photos. In this particular book, the theme is all about heart-shapes. The special meanings of this symbol for so many people: the core of our being, the lifeforce and strength, the qualities we value and strive for...lovely and thought-provoking imagery to consider and savour, paging through this book.

Would make a wonderful gift for yourself or someone you love.

Highly recommended.

I bought this book after finding sea glass on the island of Bermuda last summer. I'm obsessed with the hobby now, and the pictures in this book take me back to those awesome hours of sifting through the sand to find these glass treasures. I'm buying another copy for my Mom for this Mother's Day, because it was a wonderful experience we were fortunate enough to share together. Thank you for such awe-inspiring photographs, Josie!Sea Glass Hearts

The book itself warrants 5 stars but Amazon's packaging left a lot to be desired. The dust-jacket was scuffed & torn from being insecurely packed with another item. I ended up going to B&N to replace this "gift" for one in far better condition.

I gave this book and another on sea glass to my daughter for Christmas. She was very excited about the books and the contents inspired her. The first week of January she was at the beach, collecting more sea glass.
