This book and others written by the same author offer an opportunity for emergent and transitional readers to engage in written material about creatures from the ocean at an approachable level. The pictures are vibrant, colorful, and directly relate to the print on the pages. Students in grades 1-2 love these books because they can gather information from expository text for reports, etc. in an easy format to read fluently. The books are also a great length, only about 10 pages, so students remain engaged about reading materials.
