5.0 out of 5 stars Serious Sea Kayaker NEED this book!, September 10, 2001
By steve Scherrer "aldercreek" (Portland, Oregon <USA>) - See all my reviews
John Lull's new book, Sea Kayaking Safety and Rescue, should
be mandatory reading for anyone serious about the sport of SEA
KAYAKING. Not only does John showcase state of the art safety, rescue, and paddling techniques but he also instills a feeling about the proper attitude a sea paddler should have regarding safety.
While many folks think of the idealistic calm pond and the very stable vessel cruising peacefully along as the norm, anyone familiar with true sea conditions realizes the need for an understanding of this dynamic environment. John does a good job of introducing us to the sea, describing her many moods, in an easy to understand way. He makes the reader want to train properly and go to sea!
Tsunami Ranger John has truly been there, done that and shares his wealth of knowledge with us in a straightforward, easy to digest way. SKSR is now required reading for all of my paddlesport instructors, whitewater and sea alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for instructors and students alike!, September 19, 2001
By Lisa Bickford (Stockton, CA USA) - See all my reviews
I am a sea kayaking instructor who has had the pleasure of learning from John Lull on several occasions. John has written an excellent book full of real life experience, expert advice, clear and concise writing, great pictures, and explanations everyone can understand. For those of us who hate textbook reading, there is also a little bit of fun thrown in for good measure. It is a well written and fun read, and delivers on its promise to talk about safety and rescue.
No matter where, when, or with whom you paddle, you should add this book to your collection and read it often. It could possibly save your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Newbie Kayaker Book, August 13, 2005
I am a new to kayaking with only beginning classes under my belt and 12 hours on mostly flat water. Living is the SF Bay area there is lots of water close at hand. Plenty of afternoon wind as well. As a newbie John Lull's book has been great. I really like how John breaks the water down into domains. As he goes through the characteristics of each domain he lists the "Skills Needed" to be successful in that domain. His first chapter "Building A Safety Foundation" has a great section on managing fear. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about the sport of sea kayaking. It is a must read. It's an enjoyable read as well.
