Sea Lord,
By Nichole "Nikki" (MONROE, LA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sea Lord (Children of the Sea, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an interesting book. This is my first time reading about a selkie. The legends are interesting and the story line had a good plot. It had interesting turns and twists and it kept me on my toes. I enjoyed it even though the book seemed to be a little more erotica than romance at times. I like the way Lucy came into her power steadily growing and maturing her gift with Conn's love assistance until she was strong enough to stand her own ground.

Lucy Hunter has been content playing in her garden and being a school teacher. A child of the land, happy thinking she is mortal. Now she discovers she is apart of an ancient battle between elementals. That she is not a child of land, or a mortal, but a descendent of the children of Sea and part Selkie.
Conn, the prince of the Selkie, has come for Lucy. She is the child of the prophecy, the one that will save them all. He will do whatever it takes to bring Lucy to sanctuary and protect her from the children of fire - even kidnapping. He feels more than just passing friendship for Lucy but has learned winning the battle is not laying your heart open to love. Can Lucy convince him that he is wrong before his attitude drives her away and the future of all the children of Sea forever? Sea Lord is the third Children of the Sea novel by Virginia Kantra. I particularly loved this one and you do not have to read the others in the series to understand this novel - it is a true stand alone. Conn has a hardened tough exterior which reminds of the coolness of the ocean - seems cold to the touch but inside it is teaming with life. Lucy is very much the sunlight to Conn's coolness. She never realized her entire family has had superpowers that she came from a line of Children from the Sea. She has no clue about this Great War. She is completely taken by surprise by Conn. His sex appeal has her enamored, but his heart keeps her around as she sees the man within the Prince. When you want love, action, adventure and mystery you want to read Sea Lord!

Enjoyable but something of a steal... spoilers,
This review is from: Sea Lord (Children of the Sea, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
I might not have noticed it if I hadn't read Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword MANY times over the years, but I have, so I did. It could just be a coincidence but parts of the story were just too similar to ignore: the visions that led to Lucy's kidnapping, making her sleep when Conn kidnapped her, not understanding what role she would play but unable to ignore the visions, helping her heal others, her "running away" when he wouldn't acknowledge the demon danger, leaving his body/battle to help her, his body being guarded by his loyal warden, etc.
However, I've read The Blue Sword so many times because it's an amazing, classic story. Hari grows into her strength. Corlath is super sexy. They make a great couple. Virginia Kantra is a great writer. I enjoyed the other books in the series but as others said, this was the best. If she did "steal" the plot from McKinley's book, she did it justice. This story is gripping, sexy, fun, heartfelt. Her characters are memorable. Definitely worth reading.

Page turning conclusion to the series,
By The Escape Artist "G" (Southwest, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sea Lord (Children of the Sea, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this story expecting to not be all that impressed, based on some of the reviews on here. I know I'm in the minority when I say this, but Sea Lord really and truly is the best book in the series. Having now read all four of Kantra's Selkie stories, I thought Sea Lord was sexy and provocative, mysterious and seductive. The action was fastpaced and the scenes at Sanctuary were almost mythical. Corny, but so true. Kantra did a great job of writing Lucy's story, without the gory details that were involved in Sea Witch and Sea Fever. Out of all of the characters, I think Lucy and Conn grew the most into themselves - as opposed to Margred and Dylan who seemed to kind of just accept being human. The question as to whether a Selkie is dual-natured or whether or not they actually love also seemed to be open-ended throughout the series. I also really enjoyed how Kantra weaved all the storylines in all of these books. It was very satisfying being updated on Maggie and Caleb, and seeing Bart finally take some responsibility at the end. I really loved the fact that the Sea Crossing storyline (a short story in the anthology 'Shifter') was incorporated in Sea Lord (even though of course Emma and Griff's story is bittersweet). I'm still not sure if I was satisfied with the ending of Sea Lord, or if the ending just left me with more questions. Also, it would have been helpful knowing more background on Atargatis/Alice. I also would have liked to know more about how Lucy dealt with her gifts as she was growing up. But all in all, this is a really fantastic story you can lose yourself in.

This is a very entertaining series. It reminded me a bit of Gena Showalter's Atlantis series. I hope that that this was not the final book and there will be more in this imaginitive Children of the Sea series. It is nice to see strong women heroines...

fantastic romantic fantasy,
This review is from: Sea Lord (Children of the Sea, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Because she is the only family member without magical skills, Lucy is never included in any Worlds End demon hunting debates. Instead she is expected to remain a good girl teaching school and cleaning after her seemingly always drunken dad.
Her world radically changes when half-Selkie Prince Conn abducts her as she is the vision of his dreams that he prays will keep his people safe from a threat. Soon afterward a demon lord tries to kill her dog. Outraged Lucy decides no one will harm her or her loved ones; that is when the real odd events occur starting with the improbability of a Selkie lord falling in love with a mortal. The third Selkie-human "Children of the Sea" romance (see SEA WITCH and SEA FEVER) is a fantastic romantic fantasy as Virginia Kantra enables the readers to look deep into the souls of a lonely single human and a Selkie. The story line is similar to the previous entries as the plot enables the reader to look deep into the hearts of the lead couple and believe in the existence of Selkie and half-breed Selkie. However, Virginia Kantra refreshes her saga by escorting her grateful fans into the realm of the Selkie. Harriet Klausner

Sea Lord: Wonderful Third Book In This Trilogy,

This review is from: Sea Lord (Children of the Sea, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have really enjoyed this series. Each book is tied together, furthering the plot that revolves around the Hunter family, the Children of the Sea and the Children of Fire. I think the book blurbs and series blurb surmises the plot fairly well.
Throughout the first two books, Virginia Kantra keeps your curiosity piqued regarding Lucy's role and importance to the story arc. Lucy is a great heroine. She's insecure, yet not in an irritating way. Her life has formed her into the person she is and it fit. She wants love, and to be needed. Conn is the leader of the Selkies, wanting only to secure the future of his kind. But what he finds with Lucy is much more than his selkie nature ever expected. Selkies don't love and commit to one. Selkies are free, ever changing like the tide. Lucy warms his heart, his soul, and he wants her and only her. He needs her. Sea Witch, Sea Fever and Sea Lord should be read in order. Each one adds to the next. The characters are re-occuring throughout. I wasn't too fond of Dylan in the first book (the oldest brother). He was quite the prick, but I he redeemed himself nicely in his book, Sea Fever. Ms. Kantra has a nice dose of heat that sizzles between her characters, especailly so in the first one, Sea Witch. Her writing voice is smooth and the stories move along at a nice pace. I'd definitely recommend these books.

This review is from: Sea Lord (Children of the Sea, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ms. Kantra has come through again with the third installment of her Children of the Sea series. Our hero, Selkie Prince Conn ap Llyr denies his sensual nature to rule on Sanctuary, but is drawn to World's end, an aptly named island off the coast of Maine. He's searching for two missing Selkies, and comes across the woman seen earlier in a vision. Schoolteacher Lucy is content with her quiet life until Conn walks into her life. She had no idea her mother was Selkie. He does, and he vows to never let her go. As a demon threat grows, our hero, heroine, and their extended family learn to work together to save their people. Again, this is book three but Ms. Kantra gives enough back-story to make a new reader understand what's going on. I recommend all three in the series for hours of great reading!
