Sea monster Ernest is starting his first day of school. But starting school is a big job! Fitting in when you're a sea monster is tough enough, and there's so much to learn and do—reading, singing, playing hide-and-seek with the fishermen, lunchtime in the algae patch....This funny, charming twist on the worries and joys of starting school will reassure and delight the smallest children and the largest sea monsters alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended to Calm First Day Jitters July 16, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Sea monster Ernest is afraid of fitting in when he's so much larger and different from everyone else. Luckily there is so much for him to learn and do at school. Can he hope to even find a friend?

Sea Monster's First Day is a wonderful, delightful story that will help young children cope with starting school. As a teacher, Messner recognizes that it's hard to make new friends, especially if you feel you're a bit different from the others and it seems like everyone already belongs. This book also helps youngsters realize that as they learn together, things are made easier, and perhaps there is one special friend or group of friends they will be drawn to. Sea Monster's First Day truly encourages kids to be excited about that first day and all the school days to come.

Andy Rash's artwork in Sea Monster's First Day is superb. He captured the whimsical nature of Messner's story to perfection.

I highly recommend Sea Monster's First Day for any child experiencing first day of school jitters.

This parody of a lake monster going to school is just too cute! His name is Ernest, and he lives in Lake Ernestamke, which is colorfully laid out on the front endpapers. The back endpapers show a view of the world with six highlighted lake monsters, including Uncle Nessie from Loch Ness, Scotland and Grampa Champ from Lake Champlain, USA. Ernest is way larger than the other fish, and some groups are wary of the newcomer, but Ernest has a wonderful attitude and makes new friends and enjoys activities with them. The most endearing page is Ernest reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish to a little audience of (you guessed it) one fish, two fish, a red fish and a blue fish. Quite colorful and funny, great for storytime or a one on one read.

There comes a time in every Sea Monsters life when he must go away from home to learn all about the world and attend school. For Ernest it's his very first time ever going to school and he's filled with feelings of excitement and trepidation, but with the urgings of his mother he's off and ready to do his best. Doing as his mother taught him he introduces himself to everyone he meets, but quickly learns that it sometimes takes a bit of time to find just the right friends. With a little bit of time and creativity Ernest is off to great adventures, wonderful friendships and of course, lots of learning.

Sea Monster's First Day by Kate Messner was an adorable picture book. Not only was it educational and encouraging, but it was perfect for my son who is going to be starting school in the next couple of months. As this poor sea monster searches for new friends I could see the Turkeybird searching with him and hoping he'd quickly find them. Ernest is polite and always introduces himself, something that the my son is often weary of doing and so it was wonderful to be able to share with him the positive outcome of being outgoing.

Along the way you are able to see how Kate Messner incorporates little tidbits of knowledge through witty dialogue and situations that children can relate to. Often
the learning situations are found within a joke from one of the characters such as this...

"We hit it off right away. They said they were sturgeon, the biggest fish in the lake." - Ernest
"Well, we used to be anyway..." - his new friend.
(Sea Monster's First Day by Kate Messner, p. 27)

The way in which this new information is writing into the dialogue creates a memorable learning experience as well as a fun opportunity for discussion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable October 6, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is everything I thought it would be -- adorable! My grandson's name is Carter and sometimes his Dad calls him C-Monster. So when I saw this book, I had to get it. Plus Carter is having some challenges with going to pre-school, so the subject matter is also appropriate.
