Editorial Reviews

Review

This is a personal account by de Kersauson of his attempt to circumnavigate the globe single-handed in his 75 foot trimaran POULAIN.

It is a very personal account, highlighting the trials and tribulations of a single-hander at sea alone for long periods, of the psychological battle to keep himself going and to beat the loneliness every single-hander has to endure.

He was at sea for 125 days. In the Roaring Forties he fought the ocean as one would the enemy as he had to endure boiling seas and 25-foot troughs for many days on end. He quite graphically explains just how frightened he was, and then later describes how he felt the experience enriched him.

He was lured by Polynesia, but conquered this temptation and stayed in the race and on course for the Horn which he rounded in beautiful weather.

His frustration is clear as after the Horn he is plagued by light winds, until nearing the finish when his despair turns to joy as the first signs of human life appear, acknowledging his almost completed circumnavigation.

Only his personal accounts like these really give us a true insight into the loneliness of the single-handed sailor, and how tough it really is at sea alone. --Sailing Inland & Offshore, May 1995
