i have been waiting a looong time for volume two of erica's sea princess azuri series...and i was not alone. many moons ago i bought copies of volume one for my nieces jessie and emmie and they were enthralled and immediately started pestering me for the second chapter. i just kept telling them to have patience, but little girls are not particularly known for their patience...

anyways, sea princess azuri volume two is FINALLY here and it does not disappoint. fans of the first book will be happy to see that erica's wonderfully expressive art (aided and abetted by mara aum's tonework) is just as joyful and girly as ever. i read the book tonight and found it very easy to jump right in, even without rereading the first volume.

erica has sometimes been criticized for her "unrealistic" scripting, with the main bone of contention being that she doesn't understand boys. what a load of pish-posh. manga aren't supposed to be realistic (neither shojo or shonen). manga are supposed to be entertaining...and sea princess azuri is decidedly that. yes, the basic plot is familiar to most older readers, but it was always meant to be read by younger readers. yes, tokyopop never made good on its promise to market the series as part of a whole line of half-sized, children's oriented manga, but that's not erica's fault.

another thing that erica can't be faulted for is the fact that the story of sea princess azuri comes to a premature end in this volume, as tokyopop has decided to essentially abandon the series. erica was forced to condense her original storyline and wrap things up (more or less). technically, the story has plenty of potential for expansion, but that no longer seems very likely.

erica's heart and soul was poured into these books and i think her fans understand this. the "extras" section at the end of the book is worth the price of admission alone (a mere six bucks, by the way). if not for you, do some little girl (or boy) a favor and tell santa to send them some copies of the sea princess azuri books. and if you REALLY wanna score some points, write erica and tell her how much you enjoyed her story.

The artwork is great, better than most mangas out there. It's a quick read, and although it ends abruptly, it was definitely worth reading. I loved the mer-whales!
