About the Author

John Harris, who also wrote under the pen names of Mark Hebden and Max Hennessy was born in 1916. He authored the best-selling The Sea Shall Not Have Them. He was a sailor, an airman, a journalist, a travel courier, a cartoonist and a history teacher. During the Second World War he served with two air forces and two navies. After turning to full-time writing, Harris wrote adventure stories and created a sequence of crime novels around the quirky fictional character Chief Inspector Pel. "The Sea Shall Not Have Them" is the story of the Royal Air Force's Air-Sea Rescue Service, a little known group that rescued thousands of downed airmen from the elements and the enemy. In small, high-speed launches, these sailors in RAF blue performed a gallant but none too glamorous service, recorded here by one of their own, author John Harris.

This was an interesting book in as much as it is the first I have read on the RAF Air Sea Rescue service. The action is good but much of the book, which only covers about 24 hours, is nothing more than crew members and aircraft survivors talking and the RAF Group Captain's problems with one of his junior officers.
