4.0 out of 5 stars The two C.D.s are top notch . Not what I expected.
Sea Shanties 1 & 2 Cat # PS 65150 and PS 65014, are rarely found in the local music stores, here in Baltimore. No one seems to know what a sea shanty is and Baltimore is a large and very old sea port! What surprised me right off is that all songs are sung in ENGLISH by Aussies from down under. would have liked to hear some songs about sea monsters. The kind that usually show up after finishing your fifth pint of whiskey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sets the standard, May 3, 2000

I received a copy of a French-made CD of the New Zealand group, "The Spirit Boys," as a gift a few years ago. This is definitely the same collection (some of the songs were written by Rudy Sunde). Don't know why the name isn't on the case. I've collected several other CDs by others since, but none can compare - this one sets the standard. They generally have an unpolished sound that I imagine is far more authentic than others and their enthusiasm is infectious. You'll be singing along with them. Rudy and his friends released another CD in New Zealand a couple years ago, "Hurrah for Our Captain!", which I've not been able to lay hands on here in the US. I'm ordering Volume 2 in hopes that they are one and the same.

This CD is great. Most modern artists only give you like 12 tracks, but this album has 84! Buy this album, buy this album now.

Got into a pirate kick a year or so ago and needed good shanties.
I went through alot of the albums on itunes and did some research by ear.
Most suck. But this one really, really good.
I'll tell you right now, most of the stuff competing with this is overproduced, has instrumentation that sounds out of place on a sailing ship, or singers that just sound like a suburban men's glee club. These guys sound like they could take the teeth out of your head.

These guys sound like real sailors. The main singer (Rudy Sunde?) has a voice like boar bristle and tobacco juice.
The instruments are just vocals, and accordion, ocassionally some guitar type thing, and the odd fiddle. just what you'd expect on a voyage.

Im off the pirate kick now, in part because of this album... there's so much neat nautical history (whaling, cape horn) that no one talks about i got introduced to from here.

Trumpet hornpipes is my daily iphone alarm, has been since i bought this. Gets me up and ready to swab the deck everytime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise, May 22, 2007

I must tell the story of finding this disc. Some time ago I was showing Rudy Sunde, who performs & wrote some of the songs on this disc, how to use the email, Interweb & search and, of course, Amazon.

"They have all sorts of music", I confidently said, and he replied "Bet they don't have mine". A quick search revealed this disc listing and samples much to his surprise & delight. I must admit I was equally surprised!
