Book Description

September 1992
Magnum photographer, Kubota's colour pictures portray the beauty and diversity of a vast land, as well as the many facets of America: from the bison of the Western plains to a village meeting in New England, from the towering office blocks of New York's fiancial centre to the pueblo dwellings of New Mexico, from factory workers in Detroit to dirt farmers in the Southeast. Born and educated in Japan, Kubota has been a Magnum photojournalist since 1971.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kubota, a Japanese-born photojournalist, traveled around the United States for three years and took more than 3500 rolls of film to put together this beautiful work. The book is divided into ten geographical regions, but the photographs represent a composite of an extremely large and diverse country. Creating a "mural of America," as Charles Kuralt states in the introduction, Kubota offers natural landscapes, human-made structures, and the American people at work, play, and worship. Many of the photographic themes are predictable and a bit trite, but they are so beautifully captured that the photos can give the viewer a new light on an old subject. An excellent addition to the ever-increasing library of photographic works on the United States. -- Melinda Stivers Leach, Precision Editoral Svces., Wondervu, Col.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect coffee table book, November 10, 2000

This review is from: From Sea to Shining Sea: A Portrait of America (Hardcover)
What a beautiful way to see America! This book has it all. From the fall colors of New England to the majestic mountains to the small towns in every state. Hiroji doesn't just focus on the scenery but includes the faces of America in his book. From a local town meeting to an air show to automobile workers. Whenever I show this book to my friends, they are so mesmorized by the photographs that I've had to loan it out a few times. And I love hearing their stories of places they've been when they see it in the book. They are most surprised when they see me in the book! I'm in photograph 16 teaching computers to kids at a computer camp. But don't let that influence your decision to purchase this book. It should be on every coffee table in every house or business!
