5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing, great plot, when's the next book coming out?
Sea Strike is a great sequel to Choosers of the Slain and Cobb has clearly established himself as an author whose fans can't wait for the next book to appear. As with Clancy and Grisham, I want the next one as soon as I finished reading this volume. Commander Amanda Lee Garrett has the potential to be the focus of a whole series of sea yarns covering her whole career,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but typical "John Wayne" story
Firstly, I believe Mr. Cobb is probably a pseudonym for a female writer. It just had that feel from the writing. The good ol' USA saves the world yet again. However, certain aspects seemed horribly out of wack (i.e. "0100hrs in the afternoon"???) and an infatuation for the word "expedite". The story was slick and the book was a decent read but the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing, great plot, when's the next book coming out?, March 4, 1998
This review is from: Sea Strike (formerly titled "Stormdragon") (Hardcover)
Sea Strike is a great sequel to Choosers of the Slain and Cobb has clearly established himself as an author whose fans can't wait for the next book to appear. As with Clancy and Grisham, I want the next one as soon as I finished reading this volume. Commander Amanda Lee Garrett has the potential to be the focus of a whole series of sea yarns covering her whole career, from Ensign to Chief of Naval Operations. Cobb can follow the pattern of the Hornblower books and go both forward and backward to cover her career. She has skippered the Cunningham in the Antartic and in the Pacific, maybe the next setting will be in the the Med where they can deal with another whole scenario of battling crazies as she has to rescue a cruise ship [Cobb is welcome to the plot idea]. Naval adventure fans can't go wrong with this book, just be prepared to stay up late night to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and kept my interest throughout., November 1, 1999
By
This review is from: Sea Strike (Paperback)
I would recommend this book to techno-thriller fans. I was very pleased with "Choosers of the Slain" and couldn't wait to get into "Sea Strike". Capt. Amanda Garrett is a truly believable character. She is a gutsy and savvy skipper. She is not afraid to set the rule book aside when the only way to get the job done is to follow her instincts, which are as sharp as a tack! She is realistic in the fact that she must maintain an air of command while underneath she's still a human being with feelings and emotions. Mr. Cobb does a great job in blending these aspects into the storyline. Mr. Cobb makes the technical aspects understandable without getting too simplistic. The USS Cunningham is one amazing warship. A "stealth" destroyer with some very interestesting surprises for the bad guys. I can't wait for the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it very much, November 7, 1999

Great book! As riveting as 'The Devil's Teardrop',with a powerful ending to rival "The Triumph and the Glory" and a style perfect for the genre, this one is a must-read for fans of military thrillers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Feels like a direct hit by a Sea SLAM!, February 17, 2000
This review is from: Sea Strike (Paperback)
This book was great. I mean great. The characters were beliebvable, and I like to see for once really thrilling surface combat. I thought the pace was good, fast near the end but not so fast as you cannot believe it. The only shortcoming came when the Cunningham seemed unable to deal with the old shore batteries during the rescue. You'll see if you haven't read the book. A real thriller, with a slamming finish!

It is 2006 in the Straits of Formosa, Taiwan & Communist China are about to engage in mortal combat. Commander Amanda Lee Garrett & the crew of the USS CUNNINGHAM are sent out to prevent a Pacific Rim disaster. I liked this one a lot, thought about it for days although I won't read it again. Good imagery of future naval warfare. Great dialogue. Good characterizations. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than any other author of his type, May 21, 2000

James Cobb is good at his stuff. He use very vivid description, with a wide range of vocabulary. It also uses many good chapter-enders, which is rare to see these days in technothrillers. Also I can't find a single technical mistake in this book. But the idea of an onboard relationship between a female captain and a pilot is also refreshing, very original.

1.0 out of 5 stars needs a navy advisor, May 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sea Strike (Paperback)
I can't finish this book. Great character development, good interaction, pace of the action is appropriate. But the technical errors make it unreadable. This isn't just Tom Clancy's blunder of having an H-2 hover launch a torp in 'Red October', this is goof after goof after goof. I already ran out of sticky-notes, and barely got past midway. Too bad, likeable crew on the boat.

However, certain aspects seemed horribly out of wack (i.e. "0100hrs in the afternoon"???) and an infatuation for the word "expedite". The story was slick and the book was a decent read but the "tactical" plot was a definite stretch. I had a feeling that the Cunningham would be going up the Yangste after the first couple of chapters! and lo and behold up she went.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Again!, January 6, 2000
This review is from: Sea Strike (Paperback)
I picked up Choosers of the Slain as a fluck and it was a good fluck! I read SS in 3 days, at work no less! Cobb's discriptions of the action and the Gray Lady made me feel I was standing behind AG the whole way through the battles! Thank you Cobb for expanding AG to a human with feelings and the conflict with commanding and being in love with a subordinate. I can't wait for the next one .. and the next and the next. Cornwell and Clancy look out! Amanda Garrett is catching you fast!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting alternative to Clancy/Brown/Coonts, April 9, 2005
This review is from: Sea Strike (Paperback)
This was the first book I've read by Cobb and I have to say I enjoyed it. It did get a little tedious at times (though not nearly to the extent that you find with Clancy) but I managed to make it thru. I do plan to go back and read the first book in the series, as well as the subsequent ones.

The story was believable, as were the characters. The author also seemed to know his material. All in all, I enjoyed this book and look forward to more work by Cobb.
