3rd release from Philadelphia band—dreamy, celestial choral noise-pop from angelic genre-bending musical pioneers. Heavenly strains of melody are kissed by a wandering, avant dub-thumping psychedelic spirit. Songs often leave the hooks in the clouds while concentrating on reaching for the pinnacle of atmosphere. Similarities to Cocteau Twins, Au Revoir Simone, Blonde Redhead, Sigur Ros, Beach House, Fear Of Men, Mum, Animal Collective. Beautiful and strange dream-pop that’s a bit otherworldly.

I can't remember the first time I heard A Sunny Day In Glasgow, but I do remember how I felt. I felt as if I'd found this wonderful musical gift. Part dream pop, part shoegaze, and yet still totally modern. They were taking the building blocks of those late-80s noise genres and turning into something all their own. Ben Daniels and Ever Nalens started the band after returning to the US from being in Europe for years. Daniels is now the only original member after several line-up changes(including his twin sisters who sang in the band before leaving during the recording of their excelllent 2009 album Ashes Grammar.) Sea When Absent is long overdue, but the wait has been worth it.

"Byebye, Big Ocean(The End)" opens the album beautifully. It sounds like Kevin Shields remixing Cocteau Twins. Synths jumping from left to right as Annie Fredrickson and Jen Goma sing over the noise blasts. "In Love With Useless(The Timeless Geometry in the Tradtion of Passing)" is another blast of neo-futuristic pop. Towards the end of the song it turns into a Lush-like chorus. "Crushin'" brings Cocteau Twins to mind. Airy and melancholy. "MTLOV(Minor Keys)" is nothing short of inspiring with it's "break in the clouds" bigness.

Ben Daniels doesn't wear his influences on his sleeve as much as he weaves them into the fabric of his shirt sleeve. "The Things They Do To Me" takes some modern Medicine and mixes it with a dash 80s synth pop. A collaboration between Brad Laner and Ben Daniels would be something to behold. "Never Nothing(It's Alright[It's Ok])" is A Sunny Day In Glasgow in full-on Cocteau Twins mode. This song would've sounded right at home on Blue Bell Knoll.

I'm absolutely in love with this album! This album grabbed me from the opening track "Byebye, Big Ocean" and kept me in my seat until the wonderful closing tune, "Golden Waves," had stuttered to a stop. This is the best album of it's genre that I've heard in over a decade. While the music influences from 1990's "shoegaze" bands as My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Ride, Swervedriver, and the Swirlies (anybody remember The Swirlies??) are present, ASDIG have done a wonderful job in creating a sound that is entirely their own and maintain that sound throughout the album's 11 tracks in a way that's so infectious, it keeps the listener coming back for more... and it gets better with every listen. I'll say it again: I love this album. Love it, love it, love it.

Much thanks to ASDIG for introducing something so unique and infectious as 'Sea When Absent' into the very bland musical landscape of 2014.

This is my favorite release of the year so far. They've cleaned up the sonic goo of the previous albums to make something slightly more streamlined and accessible. Not that A Sunny Day has lost their trademark schizophrenic songwriting; if anything they've only refined it on standout tracks like "In Love With Useless" and "MTLOV". Other tracks such as the closer "Golden Waves" impress by their sheer sonic weight. Highly recommended for fans of dream pop, shoegaze, or experimental pop.

Unconventional approach produces a dreamy, yet soulful, result. Despite multiple listening, I am still discovering new treasures. I have not grown tired of this album. 4 stars do not come easily to me unless I project the cd to hit my player in the future. I can see SEA WHEN ABSENT remaining in rotation for years.

Bought it as a gift for a friend who loved the Cocteau Twins back in the day. Hints of Ride, Lush, MBV, all sorts of other weird and wonderful influences. My favorite record of last summer. Hurry up and make another one.
