5.0 out of 5 stars Great SeaQuest reading
This book is as well-written as any television based novel I have read. As noted in the review below, the author has the characters down pat. Very enjoyable read, if you take it for what it is (a short television novel). Don't expect a Hugo or Nebula award-winner. For all SeaQuest fans, read and enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not terrible, but not spectacular, either
If you're a seaQuest fan needing your fix, this'll provide it, but don't expect too much character depth. This author loves to focus on Lucas, Captain Bridger, and Darwin the dolphin, and generally brings in a few original characters. If you want the rest of the cast, you'll be disappointed; fewer of them show up in this book than in the first one, "Fire Below." If you're...

4.0 out of 5 stars Out There, In A Good Way!, March 27, 2002

One thing for sure, I loved the story, the whole idea was a really interesting one. I also loved to see Lucas as a main character in it. He really added something special to the show, and he does so with the books as well. The only gripe is, I would have liked to have seen more Lucas/Bridger interaction, and more Lucas/Ben. Both pairs always had interesting moments. Ben/Katie moments were classic too. Why, oh why did they screw up after the first season? Second wasn't bad, though you missed Ben, Katie and the Doc...and the Chief was cool, but the third season totally [stunk].
Anyway, great first season book. A definate read for Questies.

This review is from: SeaQuest DSV : The Ancient (Paperback)
If you're a seaQuest fan needing your fix, this'll provide it, but don't expect too much character depth. This author loves to focus on Lucas, Captain Bridger, and Darwin the dolphin, and generally brings in a few original characters. If you want the rest of the cast, you'll be disappointed; fewer of them show up in this book than in the first one, "Fire Below." If you're a Lt. jg. Tim O'Neill fan (like me), this book will make you go rabid and attack it with white-out and a pen, because the author STILL has his name wrong, calling him Lt. Bachmann throughout. Don't ask me why. The plot is decently engaging, and is more coherent through the novel than the plot of the first one. However, if you think you'll get sick of rather preachy dolphin superiority and philosophy, this book may not be the best choice. Also, expect this one to take a much more sci-fi turn than the show actually did during the first season (when this novel is set). The prose is fairly basic and choppy in some spots, but I did still enjoy reading it, as I'm impatiently waiting for the second and third seasons to be released on DVD. It was a decent way to spend three or four hours, but don't go into it expecting a work of Shakespeare, just a simple, sci-fi diversion.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most exciting, funny and enthralling books around, October 23, 1998

This review is from: SeaQuest DSV : The Ancient (Paperback)
I am a great fan of seaQuest and this book was to me a wonderful extension of the show. It was so funny it made me laugh out loud. The characters really came alive and it did a great job of bringing the seaQuest spirit to the paperback world

4.0 out of 5 stars The real final frontier, July 21, 2008
The television show 'SeaQuest DSV' is sorely missed in my household. Howeever, this novel by David Bischoff creates a plot that would have worked very well for a two-part episode. A creature ("The Ancient" of the title) from the depths of the ocean attacks a whaling ship and a submarine; one of the survivors from the sub is brought aboard seaQuest, but Captain Bridger doubts his story about a sea monster. There's a quasi-romantic subplot for Lucas (played by the late Jonathan Brandis) and the plot moves swiftly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Iffy book, May 8, 2000
This book was pretty good when I read it. Sort of a departure from the series when I first read it. If you're familiar with the show then I'd definitely get. Relies a lot on first season characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars I've seen better fanfiction stories, August 8, 1999
By A Customer
i was extremely disappointed by this book. The story jumped around too much and made so little sense that it was too hard to even try to follow. the ending was equally disappointing, seeing as it was unexpected, but not in a good way. however, the series rocks, so i had to give it 3 stars just for the name.
