Instructions were ok, but viewed a few youtube videos on changing a steering cable before attempting it myself. Once I started the project, took only 2 hours start to finish, with minimal tools. Much easier than expected. Hardest part was removing the steering wheel (solved by pulling hard while hitting the center with a hammer). Fortunately for me, I did not have to remove/lift my outboard for installation. Once installed and tested on the water, I could not believe how much easier my boat was able to steer. Would recommend this product.

Buy yourself a boot for the arm, to keep the UV off the grease ... And you won't have to keep replacing these #%&$;@! steering arms because they seize up on you.

Teleflex has a lock on the market. Their tolerances are too tight. The grease breaks down in the UV. Your steering seizes up ... And now your on Amazon.

Buy the boot for a couple bucks

Got my boat in the water only to find that my steering was completely frozen. When I tried to service it, I found that I literally had to pound the old steering cable out of the outboard tilt bar with a hammer and long screwdriver. It was obviously completely shot, so I knew that I was going to have to buy a new steering mechanism and cable. I was expecting to pay about $300 when I ran across this one for about half the price. It was actually more difficult removing my old system than it was installing this new one. It works great.

I replaced an old Morse rotary helm in my 1991 Bass Tracker Pro 17. The product didn't come with the helm mounting bracket. Not sure if it was supposed to. It's the brass plate in the picture with the holes in it. The hole pattern was different for the Morse, so I had to modify the old bracket by drilling some new holes. The helm unit case itself is a bit different than the Morse in that the casing 'tower' around the steering post that the mounting holes are in isn't as tall. I didn't have sufficient clearance behind my dash to mount the helm because it mounted too close to the irregular surface. I got around this by purchasing some steel cylinder spacers that went between the underside of the mounting bracket and the helm on the mounting screws. This gave me more of a 'setback' for clearance. Only needed about 1/2 inch spacers, and had to buy 1/2 inch longer mounting screws so they would reach from the bracket to the helm with the spacers in. Also, the steering post on this unit is smaller than the original. Morse was 5/8. I brought home a 9/16 18 fine thread today and it was still too big. Still looking. Did not get a nut with the unit. Old steering wheel still fits since the post is tapered. As others have noted, just a little filing made the steering wheel key fit in the slot. That's kind of normal for a good snug fit.

I am so pleased how fast we received the item. Just wish I would have read a little closer because now I need a steering wheel.

Everything I needed was included except the rod to the motor from the cable which I was able to find locally.

I bought this as a direct replacement for a unit that seized in the tilt tube of my vintage Johnson 70 on my Whaler. It took a number of hours to remove the old cable and clean up the tube. But once that was done, installation of the new part was very easy.

***Make sure you measure your old one according to the manufacturers instructions. Buying a new cable that is too short or too long would be a problem.***

Also I would like to add that this product seems to be well made - very heavy duty for the price. My old one really did not fail - it just got stuck in a corroded tilt tube that lacked a zerk fitting and had to be drifted out, which compromised the cable in the process.
