Product Description

Purigen® is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others by over 500%. Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s™ impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen® darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen® is designed for both marine and freshwater use.

Important Information

Directions
Rinse before use. Use in a fine mesh filter bag. Each 1 L treats up to 4,000 L (1,000 gallons*) for up to six months. Exhaustion is indicated by a pronounced discoloration of the beads to dark brown or black.

I have a 250 gal. tank and several other smaller tanks with a heavy bioloads. The 250 gal. tank has a very large turtle in it. This tank's water would have a slight yellow cast to it, even after a major filter and water change. I was spending all my spare time cleaning the tanks! Purigen has kept my tank's water is clear; my turtle and tankmates are healthy and thriving.
Warning, amine based slime coat products, will cause Purigen to become toxic so be certain of the type of declorinator and other chemicals you use in your aquarium do not have amine base to it. I recommend using Seachem Prime to remove chlorine, chloramines, ammonia and nitrates.
You will need to get a very fine mesh media bag to put the Purigen in as the particles are very small and most media bag's mesh are too large. Using panty hose is messy, as the particles will come out as you touch the "bag".
Purigen really works great, it is worth the money, time and effort to have in your tank filter system if you like a sparkling clear and clean tank.

Seachem Purigen is the best chemical filtration on the market, and best of all it never needs replacing. I have an overstocked 125g and the water is always crystal clear.

Its supposed to be a good filtration product, but make sure you use it with the same manufacturers water conditioner. When combined with several common chlorine remover/water conditioners it produces chlorine in great amounts. I tried this in a test tank that was going pretty well and it killed 3 of the 4 fish before I figured out what was wrong, and it happened in just a few hours.

Otherwise the concept is good...the product shlorks up organic waste and when it turns black you soak it in bleach which kills off everything it sucked up, and then you treat it with the chlorine remover sold by the same company, then its good to absorb bad stuff for another month or two. Just be careful to research which chemicals you're using and make sure they wont cause harm.

Before Purigen, I used Ammonia, Carbon and a Phosphate remover for my freshwater aquarium. Since Purigen, I have ditched everything except mechanical and biological filters and actually get much results as measured by the clarify of the water. I use it in a Fluval Canister 206 filter and it lasts about two months for a 36 G aquarium with a moderate to high bio-load. While it is supposed to be reusable with a mixture of bleach and water, you need to be careful that you thoroughly wash, neuatralize and air dry the crystals before you reuse them. Also I have realistically only recycled them a couple of times before the cleaning capacity drops to an unacceptable level. Finally buying this in 250 ml bottle costs much less than buying two 100 ml bags, so I prefer the larger sized version.

ok, i have been looking for a product which would get rid of my cloudy water.
I have a discus tank so i make water changes very often but I still would have white cloudy water.
I put purigen in my canister filter and after 2 hours, bam! Pristine crystal clear water, after fighting for months over this "cloud", it disappeared in like 2 hours!!
Awesome stuff, really, seachem rocks!
By the way, if you are going to get it for a canister filter, get the bag cause the prebagged 100ml size wont fit your it (I have a eheim 2215)

As I have come to expect form Seachem, this is another great product. It does exactly what it says it does. It gathers nitrates and nitrites from the water. This 250ml container has the loose chemical in it. (very tiny grit) You will need to purchase "the bag" by seachem. "the bag" has the perfect size bleach proof, non matalic mesh along with a resusable zip tie. Yes resusable, its pretty awesome. I have the 100ml premade bag in all my small tanks (30gal and under), and "the bag" with 250ml in my 75 gal reef tank. After about 4 months it started to turn light brown. You can let it get dark brown or even black, but I went ahead and recharged it per the instructions.(soak in in bleach water then nuturalize in prime water, the instructions are included) It worked great, the product is bright white just like when it was new. I'm not 100% sure how many times you can recharge it but a friend of mine just buys new ones every 6 months to a year. For what it does, it is dirt cheap. There are people out there that say this doesn't work so I put it to the test. I took the 250ml bag of purigen out of my sump. I then squeezed every drop I could out of it into a skinny tall glass (triple shot glass). I did this so I could insert my test strip. Right before I tested the shot glass water I tested my tank water - ammonia 0, nitrates 0, nitrites 5. Then I tested the shot glass with the squeezed purigen water - ammonia 0, nitrates 2, nitrites 50. Yes 50! that's in the deadly level. I'm an engineer not a chemist but that seems to prove to me that it is doing what it says. I expected nitrites, but I would have assumed that the nitrates would have been zero as well. It may have been when I added 5 chromis at once and a little bit of nitrates got soaked up before the bacteria caught up to convert it, don't know but it works.

I put this in the Seachem media bag and stuck it in my filter when it arrived. Two days later, my water was crystal clear and I didn't even do a water change! My fish were amazingly shiny and colorful, too. I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't just my eyes playing tricks. I definitely recommend this. Way more effective than just carbon and "re-chargable" so it's probably cheaper in the long run.
