5.0 out of 5 stars THE GITS "Seafish Louisville" A brilliant punk document., October 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Seafish Louisville (Audio CD)
The Git's fourth album, created with the help of Seattle producer Jack Endino, is an excellent retrospective of the band's short and hard lived recording career. It contains 16 songs. Five are from The Gits early singles (1991) remixed and remastered. Three tunes had never been released. The rest of the material was recorded live to 24 tracks during filming of The Gits for the Seattle music scene documentary film, "Hype!" It is also contains a CDRom with a video, hand written lyrics and live photos of The Gits. The album is remarkably consistant and well produced throughout. It flows with the gritty intensity of a live punk concert without compromising production value. Gits singer Mia Zapata's delivery is raging and honest. She shimmers with personality on stage and in studio. At last we have a comprehensive document of Zapata's innate talent as singer and lyricist, as well as the band that supported her. The Gits were one of the great rock bands of our times, "Seafish Louisville" serves as testament.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing. Can't believe HOW good..., June 22, 2001

This review is from: Seafish Louisville (Audio CD)
I had never even heard of The Gits until a recent piece on A&E about Mia Zapata's still-unsolved murder. I was blown away by the music and Mia's energy. And I was a bit miffed that I'd never heard of this incredible band or about Mia's horrible end. This is one of the most remarkable albums I've heard in years. In listening to "Seafish Louisville" I experienced a similar feeling to when I first heard The Ramones or The Sex Pistols. This is stunning stuff. Mia's voice and passion are on par with early Patti Smith, and the music soars. I wish I had the words to best describe how amazing this CD (and this band) is. I bought "Seafish Louisville" about 2 weeks ago. It has yet to leave the CD player. This is as good an album as I have heard in decades. No kidding. I truly regret not having seen them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem, April 9, 2001
By
This review is from: Seafish Louisville (Audio CD)
It's a shame that more people don't know The Gits. It's a shame that many of their albums are hard to find or out of print. I could rave about the band- the intensity, the power of the music. Given that this CD is part unreleased studio recordings, part live performance, and part remastered original album it could have been a terrible amalgam of poor quality songs and recordings. It isn't.

It is a reminder of how good this band was and a call to the listener to track down out-of-print copies of "Frenching the Bully", "Enter: The Conquering Chicken" and the tribute album "Evil Stig" (gits live) featuring a rockin' Joan Jett filling in for the murdered Mia Zapata.

Listening to this album reminded me of the first time I heard the Gits. I was a college freshman working the midnight-3 am radio shift at an AM station that no one listened to. I pulled "Frenching the Bully" off the new shelf and picked "Second Skin" as the track to play. I had never heard the band before, but had to play something off the new shelf. That song woke me up, it gave me goosebumps. It was raw and aggressive. It felt fast, but wasn't hurried. It felt like driving on the edge of a twisty road- it gave both power and a sickly feeling. The gits are like that. They still give me the chills.
