5.0 out of 5 stars THE GITS "Seafish Louisville" A brilliant punk document.
The Git's fourth album, created with the help of Seattle producer Jack Endino, is an excellent retrospective of the band's short and hard lived recording career. It contains 16 songs. Five are from The Gits early singles (1991) remixed and remastered. Three tunes had never been released. The rest of the material was recorded live to 24 tracks during filming of The Gits...

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but ...
I have always thought this band was terrible. I'm sorry they had to go through the horrible tragedy of having their singer murdered, but the music itself is heinous. You can rarely understand the lyrics, and the music makes me wanna plunge letter openers into my eardrums. It sounds like a screaming, sloppy drunk.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GITS "Seafish Louisville" A brilliant punk document., October 8, 2000

The Git's fourth album, created with the help of Seattle producer Jack Endino, is an excellent retrospective of the band's short and hard lived recording career. It contains 16 songs. Five are from The Gits early singles (1991) remixed and remastered. Three tunes had never been released. The rest of the material was recorded live to 24 tracks during filming of The Gits for the Seattle music scene documentary film, "Hype!" It is also contains a CDRom with a video, hand written lyrics and live photos of The Gits. The album is remarkably consistant and well produced throughout. It flows with the gritty intensity of a live punk concert without compromising production value. Gits singer Mia Zapata's delivery is raging and honest. She shimmers with personality on stage and in studio. At last we have a comprehensive document of Zapata's innate talent as singer and lyricist, as well as the band that supported her. The Gits were one of the great rock bands of our times, "Seafish Louisville" serves as testament.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing. Can't believe HOW good..., June 22, 2001

I had never even heard of The Gits until a recent piece on A&E about Mia Zapata's still-unsolved murder. I was blown away by the music and Mia's energy. And I was a bit miffed that I'd never heard of this incredible band or about Mia's horrible end. This is one of the most remarkable albums I've heard in years. In listening to "Seafish Louisville" I experienced a similar feeling to when I first heard The Ramones or The Sex Pistols. This is stunning stuff. Mia's voice and passion are on par with early Patti Smith, and the music soars. I wish I had the words to best describe how amazing this CD (and this band) is. I bought "Seafish Louisville" about 2 weeks ago. It has yet to leave the CD player. This is as good an album as I have heard in decades. No kidding. I truly regret not having seen them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem, April 9, 2001

It's a shame that more people don't know The Gits. It's a shame that many of their albums are hard to find or out of print. I could rave about the band- the intensity, the power of the music. Given that this CD is part unreleased studio recordings, part live performance, and part remastered original album it could have been a terrible amalgam of poor quality songs and recordings. It isn't.

It is a reminder of how good this band was and a call to the listener to track down out-of-print copies of "Frenching the Bully", "Enter: The Conquering Chicken" and the tribute album "Evil Stig" (gits live) featuring a rockin' Joan Jett filling in for the murdered Mia Zapata.

Listening to this album reminded me of the first time I heard the Gits. I was a college freshman working the midnight-3 am radio shift at an AM station that no one listened to. I pulled "Frenching the Bully" off the new shelf and picked "Second Skin" as the track to play. I had never heard the band before, but had to play something off the new shelf. That song woke me up, it gave me goosebumps. It was raw and aggressive. It felt fast, but wasn't hurried. It felt like driving on the edge of a twisty road- it gave both power and a sickly feeling. The gits are like that. They still give me the chills.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best (unknown) punk albums of all time, July 5, 2001
This review is from: Seafish Louisville (Audio CD)
Simply brilliant. From the opening chords of Whirlwind to the end of the beautiful and haunting Daily Bread, this album shows how talented The Gits were, and how tragic Mia's premature death really was. She has the vocal power and talent of Janis Joplin, but with a much more rock/punk style. Her voice gives the band a blues feel, but it's just good rock and roll. This album is in my Top Five of all time. That's quite an achievement. This is an album you will never get rid of.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album will blow you away and my opinion counts, December 4, 2003
This review is from: Seafish Louisville (Audio CD)
This album really shows how great the Gits were. Tis my favorite album. This band had so much power and so much melody and mia had such a great voice that that only band I could even compare them too is Nirvana.

But wait ... hey, don't get angry here. Let me explain. They don't sound like Nirvana or anything but they are the only other band I have ever heard that sounds so ferocious and so melodical all at the same time and just like Mr. Cobain, Mia has got a stand out amazing voice.

They're one of those bands where there just wasnt a flaw. If not for Mia being murdered they would probably have gotten huge.

If you don't like the Nirvana comparison then fine but you'll like the album.

I absolutely love the Gits, they're my favourite band. Still, I was a bit unsure if I'll like Seafish Louisville, since it has a little bit of this and a little bit of that... But when I got my hands on a copy I was blown away completely. The album's awesome. I ordered it from Amazon right away and now I'm waiting impatiently for my own copy...

I really dig this band. Mia has an incredible voice and cuts through these songs like a Punk Rocker with the blues. This is a GREAT ALBUM!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music from an honest band. Mia will be missed, December 19, 2004
This review is from: Seafish Louisville (Audio CD)
I'd known of the Gits for a while (the Seattle underground music scene was great until Nirvana broke big and oversaturated the country with its own brand of quasi-grunge), but I hadn't heard the Gits' music in a very long time.

I recently saw an updated episode of A&E's Cold Case show. It reminded me to give the Gits another listen, but most of all, it reminded me of how much talent the world lost when it lost Mia. Thankfully, Mia's murder has been solved (albeit just a few months back). I must say that The Gits definitely were a special band, with a most unique frontwoman. Mia's gravely, emotion-tinged voice conveyed alienation, loneliness, and introspection in a way that an art-poseur junkie like Cobain never could. It's a total shame that Mia isn't around anymore.
