Nothing speeds up a computer like a SSD and this is a fast one.

Not only are these drives more stable due to the solid state construction they're all so much faster than a mechanical drive because there are no moving parts.

If you can get a good deal on this drive it is definitely the best SSD out there.

Be sure to read the last update. The original review is below:

This is the first "Big Name" pure SSD drive from a mainly hard disk manufacturer. Up to now they have all come from memory, chip (Intel) or flash drive (SD, USB thumb drive, etc) manufacturers. Samsung makes more memory, flat screens, and other "stuff) than hard drives, so I put them in the memory/chip manufacturer category. Their SSD's are also excellent.

The drive itself is quite thin. This is the 7mm version and it's also available in the ultra-thin 5mm thckness. It should work well in most ultra-thin laptops. The idle (1W) power consumption is more like a conventional 5400rpm drive so battery life in Laptops and mobile devices may not be helped much.

I'm thinking that in the speed vs power tradeoff, Seagate went for speed. This might be a better choice for a desktop where power savings isn't so important.

I just installed the 480GB ST480HM000 for a client in a Dell Precision laptop. It is a very fast drive. I own a Sandisk Extreme purchased fall 2012 in my own Dell Precision laptop and this drive is noticeably faster out of the box. Both are on Windows 7 64bit with 8GB or better RAM.

My continuing concern with SSD hard drives is the flash memory has limited lifetime with writes. This concern decreases as the technology improves over time and I expect this SSD will be better than the older one in my own laptop.

Installation was simple. I used the (Apricorn DriveWire USB 2.0 to IDE/PATA/SATA Universal Hard Drive Adapter ADW-USB-KIT (Red) to clone the client's old drive. I got the latest version of the EZ-GIG copying software (4.13 at this time).

The Good:

Speed. Crazy fast drive, compared to my WD 1TB SATA 6Gbps hard drive:
--sequential reads are 272 percent faster
--sequential writes are 254 percent faster
--random reads are 5,529 percent faster (yes, you read that right--over 5 thousand percent faster)
--random writes are 4,473 percent faster

Size.
--small drive, very thin
--seems well made and is a physically attractive unit

The Bad:

After installing the SSD, I had system lockups and general instability. I was able to resolve the issue by changing the BIOS SATA mode from AHCI to IDE. Be aware this unit doesn't play well with AHCI. (For reference, my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H.)

Edited to add: after installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) drivers, and configuring the SSD to accelerate the system HDD, the system stability issues have been resolved, and the boot time for Windows 7 has been cut down to 11 seconds from the original 23 second boot process. I have also altered my rating accordingly from 4 to 5 stars. I would now recommend this unit to anyone wanting an SSD to speed their system.

Conclusion:

The real strength of this size SSD is as a system boot drive, with the OS and a very few of your most frequently accessed programs loaded on it. For most users, it will not be large enough to be a single stand-alone drive for a modern system. However, if you combine this SSD along with a larger normal hard drive, you can get the best of both worlds, the speed of the SSD along with a decent amount of storage for your computing needs.

Dear James,

We would like to thank you for taking the time to post a review of the Seagate 600 Solid State drive.

We would recommend updating your Gigabyte motherboard drivers for additional AHCI support. This drive will support AHCI and this is typically recommended.

If problems continue with AHCI on this system, please contact us by phone and we will be happy to help further. If from the US or Canada, our contact number for Technical Support is 800-732-4283.

Best Regards,
Seagate Support

This is one of the least expensive ways to drastically enhance the performance of your computer. Whether you are browsing the web, doing office work, gaming, or developing software this drive has been magic for me so far. I deal with a lot of read/write actions and I/O when programming for work.

I have been able to consistently get 500mb/s throughput out of this drive on my HP laptop. This is at least 20X faster than even the Seagate SSHD that I have (8 GB flash memory SS +750GB hard disk).

I put my old 90GB OCZ Vertex SSD in my wife's 2009 MacBook Pro and it is like new now.

From a barely functioning PC, to one with the fastest boot and functioning that I have ever seen. All in one installation! The process of installing it is an interesting thing in itself. After doing it for the first time, I discovered that I had been ignoring backup with no apparent motivation other than treating it as a nuisance.

I had to ask for some help to get the right caddy cable. Luckily I had taken a disk image onto DVDs. Without that it would have been awful. Just installing the disk brings up a whole world of options that I was unaware of. Besides the fact that this Seagate has rated as the fastest read and write speeds around is a plus, the process of buying and installing it is the education that raises an awareness of what is possible. Now with dual drives, my HP takes care of backup effortlessly in a way that an external drive cannot (if you remember you are lucky and end up with outdated backups that require a huge recovery exercise to reinstall everything.

Buy one. Do it!

First of all I bought this drive on Newegg, I frequent Amazon so I figured I'd give my feedback here as well.

This is my first SSD and all I can say is I will never buy a HDD again for operating system use. I installed this drive into a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro as the primary drive. I run OS X and Windows 7 on it. I also have a Seagate Momentus, 500 GB and 7200 RPM, in the optical bay for data storage. I have 60 GB partitioned for Windows 7, by changing some things in Windows 7 you can get your install size down to 20 GB or less, which leaves plenty for applications and even a few games. The rest is for OS X and all applications. Things like Photoshop are open in an instant, Matlab, which used to take almost a minute to open, opens in about 10 seconds. I also keep my Aperture library on the SSD for fast navigation but keep the masters on the second data drive.

As far as performance goes I timed start up before and after. On the 7200 RPM Momentus drive Mavericks started up in about 1 minute 30 seconds. With the SSD it's now just over 20 seconds to start up. It's actually annoyingly fast when hooked up to my external monitor because by the time it senses the input and turns on the computer is already started up and ready to go. Being about 3 years old my Macbook Pro was starting to show its age, but the SSD has made it new again. I highly recommend it to anyone with an older machine looking for a massively noticeable upgrade.

If you want to know every single little detail about speed I suggest reading this article by Anandtech, which thoroughly tests and compares this new Seagate drive to others like Samsung. If you can get a good deal on this drive it is definitely the best SSD out there.
