5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect notebook upgrade
I recently decided to upgrade my Dell Latitude C840 with some new ram (1 GB, I use VMWare), new batteries because the old ones would no longer hold a charge, and a new hard drive.

I had an IBM (Hitachi) travelstar 40GNX (IC25N040ATCS05-0), which was a fairly nice hard drive except the size (40 GB) was just not enough. However, now that I've had a chance to use...

My drive failed after 7 weeks of pretty heavy use. It sounded like the actuator arm was broken(heavy clicking with complete drive failure upon bootup). There had been no major shocks or injuries to the laptop that contained the drive and no other plausible explanation for the failure. I'm now on #2 and I hope that my first experience was just a fluke. However, I'm forced...

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect notebook upgrade, March 21, 2005

This review is from: Seagate 9W3277-556 100GB 2.5" Notebook Internal Hard Drive (Personal Computers)

However, now that I've had a chance to use my new Seagate drive for a while, I must say that I got much more then more space.

This new drive is of course much larger, which is wonderful, but what has surprised me is the SPEED and SILENCE. This drive is a 5400 rpm drive (I decided to go with a 5400 rpm instead of a 7200 for power and capacity reasons) which is the same speed as my hitachi, but it is notably faster. And even more surprisingly, I simply cannot hear this drive!

If you're looking for a new drive I highly recommend the Seagate ST9100823A, it is exceptionally fast for a 5400 rpm drive, whisper quiet, and of course 100 GB should give you plenty of room to play with.

5.0 out of 5 stars new drive for my Powerbook G4 12", May 10, 2005

This review is from: Seagate 9W3277-556 100GB 2.5" Notebook Internal Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
This drive replaced the stock 40GB drive in my Apple Powerbook 12" (2003). The new Seagate drive is quieter, runs cooler, slightly faster and, obviously, is a lot bigger. The installation was pretty straight forward (with instructions from PB FixIt), and from start to finish took 45min (I used CCCloner to move my life from old drive to the new drive).

Conclusion: the new Seagate drive is a nice relatively inexpensive upgrade for my laptop. I like the fact that it's running cooler (runs at about 114F, whereas with the old drive it ran at 120F). The old drive is the new back-up, in a 2.5" enclosure.

*** update ***
after one year or serious use (changing climates and very serious traveling) this drive has performed flawlessly. as an added perk, i look at the new line of Mac laptops and see that only the highest end versions have drives this size; in any event, my daily use requirments have far exceeded the 40GB OEM that shipped , proving that while this is a great drive, it was also a necessary upgrade for me.

However, I'm forced to give only 2 stars based on my 2 month experience with the drive so far.

I will say that other than the drive failure, the performance has been very good. There's some mild clicking that can be heard from the hard drive when in use, but its fairly mild when compared to other 2.5 internals.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Word ---- Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet !!!!, May 23, 2005

When I started searching for a new hard drive for my 17" Powerbook, I focused on Hitachi and Toshiba. Somewhere during the search, I stumbled on the Seagate 100GB Momentus Hard Drive.

What really caught my attention was the 5-year warranty! So I snapped it up and all I can say is WOW!!! It's quiet, cool and noticeably faster than the original 60GB drive. Way to go Seagate!

Some side notes: I believe the 5yr warranty is tied to having an authorized dealer install it, at least on the Mac side. Not sure about PC users. In any event, the installation took 20 minutes and Carbon Copy Cloner, restored the system to perfection.

If you're in the market for a new notebook hard drive, you can't beat this series.

BTW, a 120GB version ships in June, but it's only a 5400 rpm, not the 7200.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight forward drive, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Seagate 9W3277-556 100GB 2.5" Notebook Internal Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I didn't know if this drive would work for my laptop. I have a dell inspiron 6000. I put the drive in and I installed windows right away.
The description for this drive is confusing. It is a Seagate MOMENTUS drive, so it is standard for many laptops.

What a great upgrade. I replaced the drive in my Dell Inspiron 8500, and it runs noticably faster. The great unexpected feature is that this drive runs Cooler and Quieter. This drive does not come with any software, so please keep this in mind if you are replacing your boot hard drive.

As others have reported, hard drive failed after weeks. Computer would not boot to the sickening sound of the actuator clicking repeatedly. Will try to get replacement, but I am reluctant to lose another night's sleep getting my laptop back on the road. When it worked, it was great.

Placed this drive in my notebook and it failed after 3 days of use. Lucky that I had a clone made by ez-gig. I have found other comments on internet about the failure of this drive ... Just say NO!

A great update for your notebook, if upgrading from a 4200rpm HDD you will notice a very nice performance boost. Besides is nice to have plenty of room foryour projects
