4.0 out of 5 stars Breif Review
I purchased approximately 10 of the Seagate 300 GB drives in the past year. Only one drive had a problem where it failed to format, the rest have been fine. They have been employed in a variety of external cases as well as internally in both Macs and PCs. The drives are remarkably quiet and seem to have decent performance.

Pros:
- Quiet operation...

Pros:
- Quiet operation
- Decent speed
- Consistent reliability

Cons:
- One bad out of 10

Recommendation: Overall Seagate drives seem to be reliable, despite the problem I've had with one. It's a good idea to do a low level format (long format) on any new drive, which was how I weeded out the bad drive.

I had TWO of these die in the first 30 days! Both times, the drive would shut itself down with a "clunk" in the middle of writing something to the drive. Seagate technical support verified that the units were defective. I have found quite a few other people having the same problem with this particular unit on some of the tech support web sites. Although I have always been a Seagate fan (I used to build computer systems and always used Seagate drives), the quality control and/or engineering on this particular product is horrible.

I returned the second one and purchased a Western Digital drive, which has been working perfectly.

Don't take the chance with your data until they fix the problems with this model. Buy something else!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works fine for over a month now, August 10, 2005
This review is from: Seagate 9Y7274-557 300 GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I've got one of these in a remote win2k3 box in a datacenter. It's used right now to do various things, and one of those is host torrents for alluvion.org as well as Systm. This involves a lot of random read/writes to the drive as various 'parts' of files are sent to users. Systm saw over 1000 people download the file of Systm Ep. 1 at once, and the server (using this very drive) was able to do that quite happily and speedily to about 150 or so at a time.

The bad reviews here baffle me, because I have had none of the listed problems. I guess it's based on luck, or the fact that I bought it from one of the amazon.com 'partners' instead of amazon itself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead from Getgo, June 10, 2005

Bought 2 of these drives over a 2 week interval, a retail kit from Amazon, and an bare drive OEK kit from elsewhere. The OEM drive worked fine in a USB enclosure, and continues to work fine. The retail kit went into a USB enclosure and immediately reported Delayed write failures, hung up the USB, etc. Tested the drive on 3 different PCs with three different systems, used Seagate's diagnostic SW to diagnose drive. All the PCs hung up after a short while, needed to power cycle to get the PC IDE controller to see the drive again...PC restarts without power cycling was not sufficient...HD controller on drive must be bad. Seagate Diagnostic SW did not find anything wrong!!!!!!! This is bad...!!!!!

Bad News/Good News: Returned drive to Seagate, they did not have a 300 GB replacement unit, so I was "Driveless" for about 6 weeks. I was suprised to see that when they did send me a drive, it was a 400 GB...works fine in the USB2 enclosure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great in my TiVo DVD Recorder!, March 18, 2005
This review is from: Seagate 9Y7274-557 300 GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
A great deal on a nice drive - plunked it into my brand-ew Humax DRT-800 TiVo with DVD-Burner (which, incidentally, is a great device!) The drive is a wee bit louder than the stock 'media' WD Caviar 80GB, but with the cover back on, and the player in my bedroom, I don't find it loud enough to be a disturbance. Acess is fast, and my TiVo did not appear to lose any responsiveness at all (which is sometimes a sign of a aslow, or even dying drive!). Been chugging flawlessly away for over 2 months now, recording more shows than I know what to dow ith! So I archive them to DVD-R!

Oh - did I mention TiVo rocks :)

1.0 out of 5 stars NEVER buy Seagate, October 7, 2007
This review is from: Seagate 9Y7274-557 300 GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I'd like to share my Seagate experience with anyone who is remotely considering purchasing a Seagate drive. I purchased a 250GB drive, it failed within 9 months.

The first RMA drive I received from Seagate ($20 my cost for shipping) was Dead on Arrival.

The second RMA drive I received from Seagate ($20 my cost for shipping) was Dead on Arrival.

The third RMA drive I received from Seagate ($20 my cost for shipping) was Dead on Arrival.

After complaining all the way up the corporate chain via "Community Relations" I received another refurbished RMA drive of a larger capacity (320GB). It worked.... for a while. I use the drive to run monthly backups. It's in a USB enclosure and the drive failed roughly the sixth time I turned it on.

I've begun the complaint process with Seagate yet again, although I doubt it will lead anywhere. I've also filed a complaint with my states Attorney General.

I work in I.T. and Seagate used to mean quality, but no longer is this true. I've done some research at work and it seems Seagate drives fail at more than twice the frequency of their competitors. RMA drives from Seagate have even worse reliability.

If your data is important to you DO NOT place it on a Seagate disk drive.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Experience, March 16, 2006
This review is from: Seagate 9Y7274-557 300 GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I usually dont write reviews for stuff but this is just ridiculous. You can add me to the list of failed Seagate drives i have one with this exact PartNumber fail 9Y7274-557. I bought two 300gb drives one made in Thailand (the one that died) and one made in Singapore with a different Part Number. This drive in particular failed within 3 weeks of buying it new. It died for no apparent reason. The drive was installed but not in use (not writing at the time and had been briefly written on (25 gb of personal data was lost). The drive was being monitored for temperature and it was not overheating and had active cooling. The drive just stopped after the computer had been on an hour. After that it would not spin up again. I am now worried that the other drive might die any minute.. its almost full.. stupid Seagate...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Hard Drive, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Seagate 9Y7274-557 300 GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I would recommend this Hard Drive to anyone wishing to replace an existing Hard Drive. Works fast and secure with minimal noise. Actual Storage Size is 279 GB. (This is normal for a 300 GB Drive) Easy to install and setup. I have been using this drive for about 2 months now and still have not had any problem with the drive. I bought it also because it was around $100 at the time of my purchase, after rebates. Overall Good Product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loomans review on Seagate 300, December 5, 2005
This review is from: Seagate 9Y7274-557 300 GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
The Seagate brand and its quality were the foremost drivers influencing my purchase decision. The product works flawless. Installation instructions were straightforward. Tests on speed of the hard drive delivered the expected positive results

5.0 out of 5 stars I've been happy with both my seagate drives, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Seagate 9Y7274-557 300 GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
No doubt, you're worried about the negative reviews here. If they didn't include the "real name" bit, I would have throught they were angry ex-employees. At any rate, I wanted to provide some more perspective and note that, within my experience of two or three seagate drives, I have never had a failure. I trust the company and drives.
