In an age where more and more of our precious memories and records are completely digital, it is crazy not to make backups of your data, so you might want to consider the Seagate 4TB Backup Plus External Hard Drive as a part of your backup strategy.

In the box you get the drive itself, a power brick, a USB 3.0 cable, and a quick-start guide.

Note that the drive's case is plastic, with sharp edges and corners, so it's not meant to be a portable backup solution -- it's meant to sit on your desk. Also note that the unit does not have an on/off switch -- it's always ready for backup.

There are PC and Mac versions -- if you are comfortable formatting a hard drive, then one tip is to pick whichever PC/Mac version of the desired capacity is cheaper, then format the drive for your particular computer. For example, I chose the PC version of this drive since it was cheaper than the Mac version, then formatted it using my Mac laptop so I can use the drive for Time Machine backups.

In the video I take a close look at the drive and what's in the box, as well as how to format the drive (if you have a Mac).

In use I found the drive to be relatively quiet with fast data transfer, and the drive seemed to do a good job of heat dissipation -- the drive casing was only slightly warm after hours of heavy use.

So I'm happy with the drive and have incorporated this into my backup strategy.

I bought this in-store somewhere else but had to leave a review since the only other review says nothing about the performance of the item (and their issue I'm guessing was due to user error). This is a solid performer with a bunch of bonus features. I have it hooked up to my wireless router that is shared between both PCs and MACs. We also have our mobile devices uploading images and whatnot directly to the hard drive. Can't speak to longevity since I've only had it a short while but feature and performance wise straight out of the box, it's been great.

The Seagate Backup Plus is the latest version of the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop External Hard Drive. Both this one and the previous version have a Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Drive inside, which is a top quality drive. And the selling price of the Backup Plus is often lower than the raw drive alone. So even if you wanted to build your own external drive, you couldn't get a better bargain than this one.

The biggest noticeable difference between this one and the previous version is the external appearance. The previous one was designed to stand vertically, and minimize shelf space. If that's what you want, you lose nothing by buying the previous version if you can get it at a good price, since it performs just as well as a hard drive. The new one is designed to be used horizontally, which I see as an advantage because it's harder to knock over. For me, that's important in a backup drive. I find this one attractive, steady and the light is also easier to see.

With both drives, I did extensive benchmarks with USB 3.0 and found that the drives perform about as well as they do when the same drives are used internally. So you lose nothing in performance by using this as an external drive. The first file I copied was 22GB and took under 2.5 minutes. If you use this with USB 2.0, it will work as fast as your computer will allow. But the theoretical maximum is about 40% of the speeds I saw with USB 3.0. It also means that any competing drive will have the same limitations with USB 2.0. So if you don't have USB 3.

The 4TB hard drive is actually a pretty decent deal as most of them at the time of writing this review were over $200. Also be sure to check between the different hard drives a.k.a. PC and Mac and the sizes at the time of writing this review the 3 TB hard drive was only about $25 more than the 2 TB drive.

Also it should be noted that these hard drives to require you to plug in an AC adapter a.k.a. Wall wart to get the power you need. You want to look at a mobile external drive that gets its power from the USB cables and does not require the AC adapter. The one thing about the external hard drive that require an AC adapter is you can get 3TB and 4TB of storage and you don't have to pay a fortune. So think about this and you need something more mobile and portable.

You can use the PC compatible external hard drive with your Mac and save $10 at the time of writing this review. The Mac drive was $169.99 whereas the PC drive was $159.99 but they're the same drive. Some Mac users don't understand that any external hard drive can work with your Mac all you need to do is reformat, I provide those instructions below.

This hard drive is Mac compatible just follow the steps below to format the hard drive for your Mac. If you're a Mac user setting up or erasing this drive up with your computer is super easy follow these steps.

1. Plug in the the drive
2. Open up disk utility found in your applications folder inside the utilities folder
3. Next select the newly plugged in a drive and on the right-hand side you should see partition click on that.
4. Then inside that screen on the partition layout drop-down choose how many partitions you'd like to set up. I generally go with one partition and just use folders to organize my files.
5.
