I want to start off by telling you that you can use any external hard drive with a Mac you just need to format the hard drive with a Mac compatible file system. I'll explain below how to do that but if you search around Amazon you can almost get a 2 TB hard drive for the price you pay for the 1 TB "Mac compatible" price tag. But still I like this hard drive a lot as it has the Mac look.

This hard drive is an okay priced when compared to other external hard drives on Amazon. This is an "portable" hard drive meaning all it needs is a USB plug into your computer to transfer the data and get power from. That means you don't have to plug in an AC adapter to your wall socket. I prefer these hard drives over the kind that require an AC adapter every time. This will also work with USB 2.0 adapters the speeds for 2.0 transfers are still fast enough for most users at about a gigabyte of data every 30 to 40 seconds.

Before jumping in to a hard drive purchase be sure to buy the biggest hard drive you can afford as with everything nowadays going digital you will want/need that space in the future.

If you're a Mac user setting up or erasing this drive up with your computer is super easy follow these steps.

1. Plug in the the drive
2. Open up disk utility found in your applications folder inside the utilities folder
3. Next select the newly plugged in a drive and on the right-hand side you should see partition click on that.
4. Then inside that screen on the partition layout drop-down choose how many partitions you'd like to set up. I generally go with one partition and just use folders to organize my files.
5. Then on the right-hand side you can name the partitions and select the format.

Size Name: 500 GB Verified Purchase
I picked this hard drive after a lot of searching, scanning through reviews and comparing models. I was torn between picking a 500 GB or a 1 TB hard drive. I was looking at some WD drives and this one. I needed a drive for just routine backups. I have over 100 GB in Dropbox, but using it exclusively for all my backup is not very convenient. It takes very long to upload and not absolutely everything can fit in it. The point is that I didn't need a hard drive to lug around a large media library with me. I mostly stream stuff and I have a rather large drive in my notebook anyways. This is why 500 GB would work for me and I didn't desperately need a terabyte of space.

While some other drives had double the space for just a few more dollars, I went with this one because of its size and weight. This thing is slim and looks very decent. Taken out of the rather easy-to-open packaging, this device was not that special looking. It doesn't have cool colors, designs or accents. It's a rather plain device with a silver metal top and a black plastic bottom. The top will match your Mac. The drive overall feels very good when held. The bottom may be plastic, but it doesn't feel like a flimsy thing despite the very light weight. It comes with a very small, but just long enough USB cable. You could put both into a pocket and not notice. It's that slim. It comes with a 2 year warranty, while some drives come with longer warranties, but I don't worry too much about that because I will not be storing sensitive data on it.

The USB 3.0 transfer rates are fast enough. I was able to copy my entire iPhoto library file (about 15 GB) in a matter of 10 minutes or so. Same with my 10 GB iTunes folder.

Given that the Seagate Slim 500GB USB 3.0 drive is so small, and uses smaller 1.9" hard disks, I had low expectations for the performance of this drive, and I am happy to say I was BLOWN AWAY, although this drive is not perfect. If you're looking for the perfect super-small drive to match your MacBook Air, this is THE drive.

From a performance perspective, all that I can say is WOW! This drive absolutely smoked comparison against my larger WD Passport 500GB USB 3.0 drive. On my 15" Retina MacBook Pro, copying a 66 GB virtual machine took just over 10 minutes on the Seagate Slim vs 12 min on the WD. BlackMagic SpeedTest benchmarks the Seagate Slim at 110 MB/s on read, 109 MB/s on write vs the WD drive (95 MB/s read, 74 MB/s write). That is VERY impressive performance for a spinning disk, and especially at this size and pricepoint.

The build quality of the case is excellent - a super-slim case that is just slightly thicker than an iPhone 4, and 2/3 the thickness of the bottom of my Retina MacBook Pro. The case has a matte-finish aluminum top, drive access light on the top rear, and a single USB 3 connector on the rear (the drive is self-powered). Included is a short USB 3.0 cable, but no protective case to prevent scratches.

As a Mac version, the drive comes formatted for Mac (GUID Partition Table, MacOS Extended format volume) and can be booted if you install MacOS X on the drive. You can also use this drive for Time Machine backups. A strange omission for being a Mac-format drive is that Seagate has no custom drive icon, even though a Windows icon file is included on the drive. There is a folder of Videos that are not very helpful - basically a 4-minute marketing pitch in very low-resolution.
