2.0 out of 5 stars This NAS-ty is SLOW!
it hasn't even been two months since i got this and it's already lagging.
It's got two drives set on raid 1, meaning the drives are working redundantly or mirrored.

no point of even serving media when all you hear is a sound every 30 to 60 seconds because of the slow stream.

maybe i have a defective one. but geez! that means quality control sucks!

to top it off, the people on their tech support know nothing to fix this.

SEAGATE, Contact me if you find a solution to this and i'll retract this statement.

I purchased this product over a year ago and it has been a very wise purchase for me. From the setup through the operation of this device, it has been a solid performer and has been easy to access for the entire family. I store pictures, video, and music on this device and map network drives to each machine on our home network. How do I know it is easy to use? Nobody in my family EVER complains about it not being available, has complete access to all of their files, and I can restore any machine on our network without worrying about any personal files being lost.

My current uptime is 88 days (only because I had to reboot the device to reconfigure my network). The internal system in this device is solid and the update procedure for its operating system is easy as pie.

Great job Seagate!

I've had this unit for about 2-3 weeks now and I'm very happy with it. I've got it connected on my gigabyte LAN, configured it and have had no issues. Its very fast when accessing. I even use this NAS to stream to my TV using (Xtreamer) and have had no issues. I have it configured for RAID 1 and so far so good. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a NAS device.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just awful, December 10, 2010
This review is from: Seagate BlackArmor NAS 420 4- Bay 2 TB (2 x 1 TB and 2 Empty Bays) Network Attached Storage ST320005SHA10G-RK (Personal Computers)
Do not buy this product if you want to use it with active directory. Its design is awful. To simply get it to sync with AD users and shares was a complete nightmare, and I have had many problems with client computers not being able to release locks on files. This makes me have to reboot the NAS, which breaks its synchronization with Active directory. So I have to then re-join it to active directory. Absolutely pathetic product.

Received this unit with Acer parts and the "New" was actually opened item box that was re-wrapped. Sent it back and went somewhere else!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy from Seagate, August 16, 2010
This review is from: Seagate BlackArmor NAS 420 4- Bay 2 TB (2 x 1 TB and 2 Empty Bays) Network Attached Storage ST320005SHA10G-RK (Personal Computers)
Do not buy this hard drive. Their customer service is dreadful. There is no way to uninstall a license. This means that once you've used your 5 licenses, if you decide to retire a computer and replace it with a new one, you have to buy a brand new license. This happened to me only 1 month after I installed the license on a computer. Western Digital is a far better choice. Don't make the mistake I did. Don't buy from Seagate.

1.0 out of 5 stars One Drive DOA, January 29, 2010
This review is from: Seagate BlackArmor NAS 420 4- Bay 2 TB (2 x 1 TB and 2 Empty Bays) Network Attached Storage ST320005SHA10G-RK (Personal Computers)
I was looking for a backup solution for both Windows & Macs. This looked like the one. It was easy to set up, however drive 1 was no good. Seagate offered good tech support. When I asked about using Time Machine on my MAC, then I learned I would have to drag and drop and files I wanted stored manually. Well, so much for that. I am returning it.

1.0 out of 5 stars What Seagate Doesn't Tell You In The Instructions !, March 20, 2010
This review is from: Seagate BlackArmor NAS 420 4- Bay 2 TB (2 x 1 TB and 2 Empty Bays) Network Attached Storage ST320005SHA10G-RK (Personal Computers)
I had to call Seagate to find out if 1.5T drives would work in this unit, they told me yes if the Firmware on the drives is one of 4 codes, which the 5 new drives I purchased weren't, but they are available from Seagate which is a much higher price. Also, the manual says optional spare drive cradles are available from Seagate. Ya.....in about 6 months ! This is a nice unit if the included drives are enough for you, but if you need more storage space, this is not the drive for you........
