I received my Seagate Business NAS (SBNAS) on February 26 of this year. It was a 2TB + 2TB Raid 1 (2 bay). The firmware was 2013.60193. I set up the Public folder with Media Server and Recycle Bin Manager enabled. I began using it by copying a number of music files and picture files from another NAS, and then extracting additional music files directly to the Seagate Business NAS. I was having difficulty getting the extraction process the way I wanted, so I ended up deleting a large number of music files, which went into the recycle bin. My first indication of trouble was when I discovered that I could not delete the files from the recycle bin. After a nice discussion with Seagate Technical support, we mutually agreed that the simplest thing would be to rebuild the volume on the SBNAS. I did this. (It took about 7 or 8 hours) The music files I was creating ended up having pretty long filenames, and I suspected that might be part of the problem. I did a lot of testing by varying the length of filenames and whether or not deleting these files caused difficulty with the Recycle Bin Manager. (In particular, the ability to Undelete). I was able to determine that if the filename plus extension was 127 characters or less, no problem occurred, but 128 characters or more caused problems. The additional length caused by folders names and a drive name did not seem to affect the 127/128 character filename breakpoint. I felt this information indicated a possible problem in the firmware, such as using a signed byte data rather than an unsigned byte or integer data type. I was not getting anywhere pursuing this theory with first line technical support, so on the third call ( on 03/13) I requested escalation.

Do not buy this drive under any circumstances. It took forever to get it set up, and when
that finally happened it just doesn't work. I couldn't use it as my primary media server
because it kicks off line every two hours. I had to relegate it to doing backups only.
Now I cannot even finish a Norton Backup before the damn thing kicks off line and must
be rebooted. (this note was edited in after months of use)

The Dashboard Program has a bug that prevents me from creating a shared folder. It refuses to
recognize the Volume I have established nor will the Dashboard allow me to manually enter the
volume number. All attempts to contact Seagate Technical Support
either through Chat; or by eMail have failed because of technical problems with their
site, I'm posting this here to try and contact them. If they don't respond within the next
three days I going to send the box back.

I should also note that their technical support site does not even recognize that this
product exists. They have downloads for the 4 bay and 1 bay Business Storage
device but not the 2 Bay unit, so it is not possible to verity that the Firmware software
is the current version.

This Paragraph is added two weeks after the original review above. I have worked closely
with Seagate technical support by telephone. The company refuses to deal with the problems.
They have cost Amazon a lot of money having me replace pieces of their system when
the problem is clearly in their firmware. Seagate refuses to attribute the problems
to their firmware so I have no way of knowing if they are even
working to solve the problems or when I can expect them to be fixed.

Please check to see if there are any firmware updates available for your Business Storage drive as we have recently updated our firmware to improve performance. To check for an update, check your announcements in the opening Dashboard admin page or go to System>Firmware update. If the issue persists after the firmware update, try deleting the volume and recreating it.

I bought the STBP8000100 about a month ago. This is the 4-bay 8TB model set up with Raid 5. As a file server it does a pretty good job. It seems fast enough and it's very quiet. Other than that, I can't say anything good about it. It was supposed to come with 10 backup licenses which it did not. Tech support did resolve this however. The USM slot is worthless with it's current firmware level of 2013.60193. I was told there was going to be a firmware update in April and that never happen so here are the issues I see right now with it's current firmware. When I purchased this NAS, I also bought a 1TB Backup Plus external USM drive to backup the NAS. It is SO SLOW. I have about 650GB on the NAS and the backup estimates 115 hours to complete. It didn't take that long but it did take about 7 hours. I was concerned that the backup was no good so checked all the files and it seemed OK. For my next test, I deleted one of the folders from the USM drive and ran another backup. It did not replace the missing folder leading me to believe that the backups of my NAS were not reliable. I created a automatic backup job to backup my NAS to the USM drive daily. It never runs unless you press the button to run it manually. I decided to setup a One Touch backup (which really takes 8 touches)so I can run it from the front of the NAS without loading the software interface. It appears to run, but with the same issues I have when I run it manually. I say it appears to run because you can't tell unless you open the software to see the status. This NAS has an LED screen on the front that gives NO INFORMATION about what's doing. Sure would be nice if the screen displayed NAS>USM BACKING UP NOW when it was backing up the NAS to the USM drive.Read more ›
