I have several machines at home and the old hard drives were solid and are still working. I built a new machine and it has a total of 3 seagate drives in it, 1 PATA and 2 newer SATA drives. The newer the drive, the smaller and lighter they are. And because of price competition, the less expensive they are. And so it goes with life expectancy. And when a drive dies it is never good. And both of the SATA drives died on me, after the one year warranty, but nonetheless dead.
The warranty that a manufacturer puts on their product gives one an indication of what they think and know about their product. This enterprise drive has a 5 year warranty, so that tells one much. Do your homework and you will see that it also has two bearings, a major improvement, plus a MTBF of over a million hours. That is many years. It also has 128 MB buffer.
I ordered it and it came in, but poorly packed. Amazon needs to learn that bubble wrap is for shock absorption and belongs on all sides of the drive before putting in a box. It must be a well made drive, in spite of this horrendous packing job. The drive physically resembles some of the old drives, bigger, heavier, more solid construction.
I installed it in my machine, did a format and partition, and it runs very well. I am very pleased with the performance of this drive. So pleased, that when Amazon learns how to properly package it, I will buy another. I suppose that offering to buy another is positive sign about how pleased that I am with this drive.
If one values their machine, and actually uses it for work, then the aggravation when a drive dies is far more expensive than the few extra dollars to purchase an enterprise drive such as this over a regular drive.

The following is my EggXpert review from Newegg:

The first thing I did when I received the drive is to format the drive with Btrfs, XFS, and Ext4 (currently using kernel 3.14.4), configured the disk to use deadline disk scheduling, and installed the Phoronix Test Suite with all of it's disk benchmarking utilities. Countless hours of benchmarking and rebenchmarking ensued.

Regarding temperature of the drive, it runs rather cool at 37C at room temperature (2C higher than my 3TB hard drive) while under heavy load and does not seem to make a sound at all from my perspective. This is a great win for cutting down the need for cooling, space and energy if you are running entire arrays of these drives.

First off, here is a quick benchmark using hdparm for obtaining the maximum read speed, and dd for getting sequential write speeds at various sizes with different file systems. This gives a rough idea of exactly how fast this hard drive is at different levels of workload.

hdparm [Read Test]
210.31 MB/sec

In order to get the most accurate readings from dd, I ran dd through a timed bash shell that makes sure to sync the cache to the disk before exiting.

dd [Write Test - 500,000 count]

Btrfs
1k = 119.24 MB/sec
2k = 147.74 MB/sec
4k = 186.37 MB/sec
8k = 203.90 MB/sec
16k = 213.71 MB/sec
32k = 215.25 MB/sec

XFS
1k = 143.02 MB/sec
2k = 164.34 MB/sec
4k = 186.18 MB/sec
8k = 202.98 MB/sec
16k = 210.62 MB/sec
32k = 215.82 MB/sec

Ext4
1k = 119.43 MB/sec
2k = 145.06 MB/sec
4k = 172.71 MB/sec
8k = 195.58 MB/sec
16k = 206.08 MB/sec
32k = 208.92 MB/sec

Both Btrfs and XFS came very close to each other, performance-wise.

This drive delivers sequential reads & writes up to 165 MB/s, and has access time of 8.4 ms. Impressive from a 7200 rpm drive.
Has 5 year warranty as well.
Really worth the price premium if you value your data.
I would recommend the Constellation ES.3 for servers as well as performance workstations.

With a glorious 6 terabytes, this is the biggest individual SATA drive available-- and a new addition to Seagate's now-rebranded Constellation ES enterprise series. This drive's little brothers still carry the "ES.3" designation.

Performance is top-notch. Through a Plugable USB-3 dock, the drive sustained write speeds of 133MB/s averaged from overwriting the whole drive. On SATA2 (3Gb/s), I frequently sustained 180-200MB/sec (although performance varied based on OS load and presumably by whether I was writing to the inside of outside of the platters).

I'd expect even better performance with the drive's native SATA3 (6Gb/s), though I didn't have a chance to try it. The other specs match all this beefy performance; it has an unusually large 128MB cache (64MB is the largest I've seen before), and runs 7200rpm instead of the slower variable-rate (or 5400rpm) drives common in large consumer drives.

One caveat with all of this performance; it's hot. This is a substantial drive with a lot of platters, so even in a well-ventilated consumer-grade case, it runs about 2C warmer than my 3GB Seagate ST3000DM001's (3-platter drives). My home office temperature varies, but the HDD temp ranged from 28C - 34C with good ventilation and spacing between drives. If you're doing a batch of these drives in one system, be sure it has good directed/forced airflow. There's a reason the fans in rack servers sound like jet turbines!

Another caveat is applicable to using any large single-spindle storage; its performance suffers under a load of mixed read-write or random-access requests. Although a well-tuned operating system or raid controller can offset that degradation, it's really physical limits of a single drive.
