I have several machines at home and the old hard drives were solid and are still working. I built a new machine and it has a total of 3 seagate drives in it, 1 PATA and 2 newer SATA drives. The newer the drive, the smaller and lighter they are. And because of price competition, the less expensive they are. And so it goes with life expectancy. And when a drive dies it is never good. And both of the SATA drives died on me, after the one year warranty, but nonetheless dead.
The warranty that a manufacturer puts on their product gives one an indication of what they think and know about their product. This enterprise drive has a 5 year warranty, so that tells one much. Do your homework and you will see that it also has two bearings, a major improvement, plus a MTBF of over a million hours. That is many years. It also has 128 MB buffer.
I ordered it and it came in, but poorly packed. Amazon needs to learn that bubble wrap is for shock absorption and belongs on all sides of the drive before putting in a box. It must be a well made drive, in spite of this horrendous packing job. The drive physically resembles some of the old drives, bigger, heavier, more solid construction.
I installed it in my machine, did a format and partition, and it runs very well. I am very pleased with the performance of this drive. So pleased, that when Amazon learns how to properly package it, I will buy another. I suppose that offering to buy another is positive sign about how pleased that I am with this drive.
If one values their machine, and actually uses it for work, then the aggravation when a drive dies is far more expensive than the few extra dollars to purchase an enterprise drive such as this over a regular drive.

This drive delivers sequential reads & writes up to 165 MB/s, and has access time of 8.4 ms. Impressive from a 7200 rpm drive.
Has 5 year warranty as well.
Really worth the price premium if you value your data.
I would recommend the Constellation ES.3 for servers as well as performance workstations.

My main boot drive, which I have installed windows on - and that I use for my more demanding computer games - is a raid 3/0 stripe array of 120 gb SSD's. Limited on space, I wanted a quality drive for storage purposes. After reviewing hardware specs and reviews - as well as anticipating and confirming the competitive price on amazon - I decided to give this one a try. I use this drive mainly for my FLAC music collection, some programs and files, and the computer games that I feel probably need the least computer resources to run. The drive has good performance and low-profile acoustics.

The first of these HDD's of this model that I ordered was D.O.A. I was quite depressed, but I know it happens; This is the first time ever I personally had received a dead HDD right out of the box, though. It did not appear damaged in any way. The bios recognized it as well as windows, but I got an I/O error whenever I tried to initialize it. After that, I got up close to my computer so I could listen to the HDD as I turned on the power; it made an initial mechanical sound, and then wound down and became silent. I'm not an HDD expert, but I suspect the motor that spins the platters may have been the problem with this one. Because of how promptly amazon responded to replacing it, how quickly I received my replacement, and due to the fact that the replacement works just fine, I'm giving the drive 5 stars.

The problem with hard drives these days is that manufacturers aren't putting the R&D into both designs and reliability any longer since the writing's on the wall for mechanical hard drives. Therefore although they're cheap, they're also prone to high rates of failure.

However, although SSDs are the future, currently they're too expensive in high capacities (eg 500gb and upwards) for the average Joe. So hard drives still have a place for some years. Therefore, if you want to ensure that your data will have a chance of survival, you need to consider enterprise drives which are a higher quality of hard drive (and thus higher cost) than the cheaper mass market ones. Although ANY drive can fail, I hope this lasts a good few years.

It comes in a plain brown box but is held in place by plastic trays to ensure that it isn't damages in transit. It's also quite heavy - which I hope means quality! I had no installation issues wth Win 7 and it's a Sata 6gb compatible drive. It's also a quiet drive and you won't hear it over any case fans.

So far so good....
Although this has only been installed a little while, I expect to update this review after a year or so.

***UPDATE*** December 6th 2014
The drive is still going strong. I've not had any issues whatsoever such as the dreaded blue screen of death, or crashes of any sort. It's still as quite as day 1 and just as fast. I'm glad I trusted my data to this drive.

It is in use everyday. No problems so far. Quiet. Fast. Lots of space for large files. Connectors mate without problem. Does not appear to have mates for locks on data and power. Using only 5V and 12V, no 3.3V. Running through molex power adapter. No complaints. Excellent warranty. Recommended. Would buy again if need another. 5 stars.
