From the Manufacturer
The GoFlex for Mac ultra-portable drive makes it easy to store and back up all your files with its plug-and-play FireWire 800 or USB 2.0 connectivity. The drive is HFS+ formatted out of the box, which makes it fully compatible with Time Machine software. Install the available HFS+ driver on any PC to use the drive interchangeably without reformatting. Use the included interfaces or upgrade to USB 3.0, or powered eSATA by pairing the drive with the appropriate GoFlex upgrade cable (sold separately).
Get the most from your Mac
GoFlex for Mac includes fast FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 plug-and-play connectivity. It lets you take full advantage of your Mac computer's Time Machine software so you can automatically save and easily recover up-to-date copies of everything on your Mac. The GoFlex for Mac comes formatted for HFS+ for Mac computers but works on your PC computers too. GoFlex drives make it easy to read, write and share files interchangeably between both Mac and PC computers with the included downloadable HFS+ driver for PCs.

But as more and more people look for 1TB drives and are wanting portability, Seagate has their cheaper FreeAgent GoFlex drives (which are in my opinion, not as robust and also comes with pre-installed stuff that you don't want) and now the 2011 release of the new Seagate GoFlex Ultra-portable drives.
Here are my thoughts on this drive:
I. THE DRIVE
The 1TB GoFlex Ultra-Portable drive is pretty small. If vertical, it's about 3 inches in height, 2 inches in width.
The construction looks like metal but it's not, it's plastic with a metal finish, but either way, metal or plastic, if you drop them from a high distance, you're probably going to do more damage anyway (and yes, I have accidentally done this before).
Although the drive is for the Mac, it also works for PC.
The contents are:
* GoFlex Ultra-Portable Drive formatted for Mac
* GoFlex FireWire 800 Adapter with 18-inch (46cm) cable
* GoFlex USB 3.0 Adapter with 18-inch (46cm) cable
* QuickStart Guide
* 3-Year Limited Warranty
System Requirements are:
* Mac OS X Operating System 10.5.8 or higher
* Windows 7, Vista, XP
* Firewire 800 or USB 2.0 port
Note: HFS+ Driver for PC operability is available by download.
You get a connector that is USB 3.0 (backwards compatible with 2.0 drives) and also a connector that is Firewire which plugs to the bottom of the drive.Read more ›
The specs are covered pretty well in the description but I did see one little facet left out: it uses a slower 5400 RPM drive. I don't mind this, because slower = more reliable and speed is not a big deal for my back ups (schedule them for late night and forget it). However it's worth noting for someone who is looking for the "fastest" back up drive out there.
I'm using it primarily for my Mac, where it has performed admirably. I have connected to my PC just to prove it could be done. A few minutes to get the driver and it worked like a charm. Overall a good drive that will save Timeline users the modest headache of having to reformat a "PC" external drive.
I figured I would give Seagate a second chance, so I went ahead and purchased another through Amazon because it was cheaper than Best Buy. I noticed the SAME EXACT problem with the new one, as with the first, and I am just so irritated. I contacted Seagate after this last purchase and they gave me the same questions like: Are you sure it's plugged in correctly? or It sounds like you may have purchased a defective one. Would you like a new one? WRONG! My brother had similar issues with one he purchased through costo a little over a year ago, and I didn't think it was an ongoing issue with Seagate, until now.
Use at your own risk!
As a hard drive it works great so far, it's the largest capacity 2.5" HD available on the market, so you get the most hard drive space for weight with this. The enclosure is secure and the hard drive doesn't rattle around like some cheap enclosures. GoFlex as an idea is a good idea, they should of just made the firewire interface better.
This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to comment on your experience with our GoFlex Ultra Portable drive. Certainly if the firewire 800 cable has been damaged through no fault of your own, we will be happy to replace this for you provided it is under warranty. This is not a common issue with this cable. The firewire cable has a separate serial number where you can return just the faulty cable itself. In the meantime you can use the drive with the included USB cable to keep the drive in working order while you await the replacement firewire cable. Here is a link for cable replacement:
We appreciate your feedback on the firewire cabling and will continue to make improvements where necessary. We should point out that even though the USB cable is detachable from the drive interface, we recommend that you use the original cable that came with the drive or one of the same length to prevent any power problems as longer cables may not provide enough power to the drive.
If you have any remaining questions or concerns, please contact our Technical Support staff at no charge, and we will be happy to assist: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/about/co
