I am a Professional 3D Designer and I use Macs since the 90s.... I owned a ton of drives of many brands including metal enclosures, etc... and I have to say this drive is awesome. First of all, I was pleasantly surprised with the aesthetic of the Seagate GoFlex. Very neat design. Beautiful black rubberized texture with an aluminum band in the front and top of the unit. It matches perfectly my iMac 2009 as well as my APC NS 1250 backup system (same dimmed blue/grey lights up front). It is running 24/7 and it is as quiet as the iMac. I barely notice the fan. It comes formatted for Mac. Just plugged it and voila! 3TB of space for $219 is a very decent price (thank you Amazon) knowing that the actual inside drive is a Barracuda XT with 64MB cache! The drive itself is more expansive than this whole unit! Seagate recently announced the availability to switch the FW800 base with a Thunderbolt one so it will be compatible with the new generation of iMacs and up to 20x faster!!!
By the way, there are two FW800 (rear and side) and one USB on the base. No switch (which I like) as the drive turns automatically On/Off with the iMac. I personally love this feature. In my opinion it is the ultimate drive to use with an iMac. I am extremely happy with my purchase. I am going to buy another one soon to backup this one with Time Machine. I would definitely recommend this drive. I hope this help.

UPDATE: 4TB of Massive Storage December 31, 2011
    By Gary
    Size Name:4 TB|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm an editor and bought the 4TB version of this drive to backup all my internal and external drives. This is my fourth external Seagate drive, none of which I have ever had a problem with. I have three of my drives daisy-chained through FireWire, which is plenty fast to access video files for editing. The drive comes with the FW800/USB2 base, which has two FireWire 800 ports (for daisy-chaining) and one USB2 port. You also get a FW800 cable, USB cable, and power supply. The FW800/USB2 base is, of course detachable, and as of now can be swapped out for a USB3 base. Seagate mentions that the drive is "upgradeable to Thunderbolt," however at this time, no such Thunderbolt base exists.

The renderings on Seagate's website and Amazon don't do the drive justice. It's very beautiful in person. The silver accent down the top and middle looks great, the soft-touch black finish feels high quality, and the drive has a good weight to it. It's surprisingly small (for a 3.5" external) and takes up very little desk space. The drive has an activity light and a four-light capacity gauge on the front. These are the only lights on the drive, and they can be turned on or off via the Seagate Drive Settings application (which comes on the drive).

I plugged the drive's power supply and hooked up the FireWire cable. My MacBook Pro recognized it instantly and I began using Time Machine without a hitch.

I should mention though, that the drive does make a fair amount of noise, if you're not used to it. Nothing loud enough to be a serious problem, but it's louder than my previous generation Seagate desk drive: FreeAgent Desk Hard Drive. I run all my drives from my MacBook Pro, and this drive easily beats my laptop as far as noise level, but MacBooks are known for being very quiet.

For about $280, this first ever external 4TB drive is an excellent choice for Mac or PC users who want a fast, FireWire/USB2 (and potentially USB3 or Thunderbolt) drive, that will look great next to any computer.

    UPDATE 2-5-12

Although initially the drive worked flawlessly, I had to reformat it recently, and when I went to do my backups again, Time Machine would begin and transfer data for some hours, but then consistently gave me an error and would never finish. I experienced this using Lion 10.7.2. I was very close to returning the drive, but I updated to 10.7.3 first to see if that would fix anything. At this time, the drive is backing up successfully under 10.7.3.

Under 10.7.2 and 10.7.3, the drive's auto sleep continues to reek havoc, as many times I have to unplug it's power supply, and plug it back in to make it mount to my MacBook. Not a deal breaker (since it's only for backups) but it does knock the rating down from 5 to 4 stars.

I've read some forums with users saying Seagate says to install their "Seagate Diagnostics" software to override the auto sleep function, but under 10.7.2, I had no such success. 10.7.3 appears to backup with Time Machine just fine, so if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

    _______________________________________________

    UPDATE 2-26-12

I now have completed many successful Time Machine backups with no errors. The drive is back to proper function for the most part. As I detailed in one of my comment replies: "I have only one FireWire 800 port on my MacBook Pro, but I have 3 devices connected, total, through daisy chain. The 4TB Seagate is the first in line, and is the only one that sometimes refuses to wake up. This only occurs when I leave the drive disconnected from my computer, but with the power supply still connected. My other two FW800 drives wake up just fine when I plug the one FW800 cable back into my MacBook. The 4TB one sometimes will remain asleep, and occasionally it will wake up properly. When it doesn't wake up, disconnecting then reconnecting the power supply fixes the problem. *Note: I do already have the recommended Seagate software installed that supposedly disables the sleep mode."

    The good:
    --Looks stylish and modern
--Relatively quiet; doesn't have a fan
    --Runs cool
--Can switch out interfaces using Seagate's modules (I'm interested to know how Thunderbolt performs)

    The okay:
--Speeds are not that great. I get about 50-60MB/s of sustained reads/writes. I was expecting something closer to 80-90MB/s.

    The bad:
--The hard drive will always go to sleep when using the FireWire 800 connection on OS X Lion (even in the middle of a file transfer).
--The Seagate software utility for OS X do NOT include the ability to disable the drive's sleep function.
--The Seagate software utility under Windows DOES include the option, but even with it applied the drive still went to sleep under OS X Lion. [See edit]
--When the drive is asleep it causes TimeMachine to freak out and not backup to my Time Capsule, causes Finder to freeze and causes whatever application that's trying to access the drive to freeze as well.

Edit: I think that I finally got the FireWire 800 connection to work correctly. Originally, I applied the setting I didn't power down the drive. But now that I did power down the drive, it seems to have applied the setting. Now under OS X the FireWire 800 connection seems to be behaving.

Steps for OS X users to get the drive to function correctly when using a FireWire 800 connection:
    1) Connect the drive to an Windows machine or connect it to a virtual machine (I ran the Seagate utility using Windows XP in a Parallels virtual machine)
    2) Install and then run the Seagate utility (can be found on the seagate website)
    3) Disable the sleep function
    4) Dismount the drive and unplug it from the computer and power supply for a few seconds
    5) Connect the drive and use it as normal

I'm rating this drive with 3 stars because I believe that a drive should work right out of the box and because the speeds aren't that much greater then USB 2.0. Seagate also needs to add better support for OS X. Why does the Seagate utility only offer full functionality under Windows? Ridiculous.
