5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected.
I expected this drive to work, of course, but I did not expect it to be so quiet. It has been my experience that Seagate drives are the most robust and dependable, but the reliability has typically come at the expense of noise levels higher than that of comparable drives. 3.0 out of 5 stars portable hard drive
The hard drive does its job well. Luckily, I bought it about a month before the computer, with hours of Photoshop work, failed. It isn't easy to operate and find files. The operating manual hasn't soaked into my brain. But with a little patience I'm sure it work out OK.

I expected this drive to work, of course, but I did not expect it to be so quiet. It has been my experience that Seagate drives are the most robust and dependable, but the reliability has typically come at the expense of noise levels higher than that of comparable drives. As an owner of the 500GB WD Blue 2.5" drive (which is quieter than a whisper) I didn't expect this drive to be as quiet but I decided to give it a shot anyway because I needed one in a pinch and couldn't get another WD model on such short notice. To my surprise, this drive is just as quiet as the WD model. Seagate has apparently made great strides in this department. It is my understanding that the WD model consumes slightly less energy than this drive does, but we are not talking about a large difference and I do trust Seagate reliability more than WD at the end of the day. So, in summation this seems to be a great 500GB 2.5" drive. If something changes down the road I will return and amend my review as I always do when new information arises.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as expected., November 11, 2009

When I was looking for a replacement drive for my 120GB PS3 Slim, I knew I wanted to upgrade to a 7200rpm drive. After learning that the PS3 could only fit standard laptop 2.5" drives (not the server drives), I ended up choosing the Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200 for it's capacity, speed and brand name. I bought the drive and installed it per Sony's instructions, turned it on and it worked as expected. Game installs, patches, downloads are noticeably quicker (~20-30%) but I think the PS3's SATA1 interface is limiting the performance potential of this drive. Regardless, after about 200hrs of use I've had no problems with this drive. As a bonus, It's also very quiet (the PS3 system fan and DVD drive are louder). Overall a good purchase for any laptop or PS3 system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drive, November 4, 2009
Had this for about six months now, it is in my primary work laptop so it is on 8+ hrs a day, my laptop has a cooler, and I monitor drive temp so I have not thermally stressed the drive, although I did drop it once when it was on, and it continued to work fine).

This drive was an upgrade from a 250Gb 5400RPM WD, the speed increase was dramatic (I believe this is due to increased data density not RPM). It also uses less power than its 250Gb predecessor.

I also bought the 5400 RPM version of this drive and used it as my main drive (for about a week) before switching to the 7200 RPM version here. Frankly I didn't notice much difference between the 5400 RPM and the 7200 RPM versions, performance, power, noise are all about the same. The dramatic performance increase came from the size upgrade from 250Gb to 500Gb.

This review is from: Seagate Momentus 250 GB 5400RPM SATA 3Gb/s 8 MB Cache 2.5-Inch Internal Notebook Hard Drive - Retail Kit ST90250N1A1AS-RK (Personal Computers)
I bought this drive to use with a OWC Mercury On-The-Go Portable 2.5" FW800/USB2.0 Enclosure Kit in order to have a bus-powered external drive for my MacBook Pro, both as supplemental storage and as an emergency boot drive. It's performed both functions well for nearly two years now. It's very quiet and fast enough to serve up video content at HD resolutions. It can run a little warm in an external case without forced convection, but this isn't a problem in most circumstances.

5.0 out of 5 stars My PS3 is happier than ever!!, October 18, 2010

My baby (the PS3) is happier than ever!! While transferring the data to a new drive is a pain sometimes, it's worth it to see all the extra space. I can't help but sing it's praises, being a good sized drive the PS3 will support. Hope that this helped you in deciding!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seagate 350 GB HDD, February 14, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Great drive for the money. I need the cheapest drive for my money, I believe i paid $79 for this one. It was for a second, older, laptop that I use for testing alpha/beta operating systems and therefore price was an issue. Also, Seagate has great product support, if one of their drives fails they will send you a new one in the mail and you send the defective one back to them.

Purchased this HD to replace an original 120 GB HD on my IBM T60 Laptop. It works well, and is pretty quiet. The price is excellent too.

2.0 out of 5 stars not as Mac friendly as advertised, September 20, 2011
By
S. Fay (Philadelphia PA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I got this for my Mac laptop to replace the puny factory-installed drive, and was initially pleased. Migration wasn't a problem using an external enclosure and Carbon Copy Cloner. As soon as I put it into my machine, however, the S.M.A.R.T. status gave a "fail." Seagate said I had to run a special diagnostic tool from them since they have proprietary codes for S.M.A.R.T. status unreadable by any third-party software. This tool, however, doesn't actually run in MacOS, it only runs in (get this) DOS. Even when I created a DOS boot CD, which did boot properly, the software was still unusable - no input from the keyboard or mouse was detectable because Mac uses USB, which is not supported by the particular system that comes with their disk image, for its input devices. Seagate support people were not helpful, and forum research confirms that this problem is not resolvable.

Short story is, if you have any S.M.A.R.T. problems with this device, there is no support for Mac. Yes, it will work with your Mac, but you better hope there are no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars PS3 HDD! Definitely 5400RPM, Easiest setup!, June 22, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for my PS3 because the game installs and DLC were taking up too much space. I was hesitant at first because some other reviewers said it wasn't 5400RPM which is very important for a ps3 upgrade. But I'm here to tell you that it is definitely 5400rpm and that this is a great drive for the ps3. The old stock drive inside my ps3 was a seagate as well and that drive has lasted since the ps3 first came out in 06 (ps2 model), so this one will last just as long. The installation couldn't get any simpler just unscrew, slide out, and screw. Watch some youtube videos if you really wanna see. It takes only a few seconds for the ps3 to recognize and format the drive and then you're good to go. Very happy with my purchase, don't have to worry about deleting demos to make space for new ones, or about game installs. 5 stars all the way, thanks Amazon for the great price with free shipping, I'm a customer for life.
