Seagate Momentus 2.5" Internal Hard Drive
Energy Efficient, High Capacity Storage
Engineered specifically for low-power applications, the Momentus internal drive has a 5400RPM spindle speed and a 8MB cache to provide energy-efficient performance at whisper-quiet acoustic levels. With reduced power consumption and heat generation, this drive will reduce power costs up to 50% over the life of the system compared to standard drives. It is optimized for standard laptops and small form factor PCs.
Durable Mobility Anywhere, Anytime
Momentus is the world's most feature-rich 2.5-inch drive for laptop upgrades and external enclosures. The Momentus drive family offers innovative options, capacities to 750GB, two performance speeds and significant feature options. The Seagate Momentus drives are perfect for any standard laptop and meet your specific upgrade needs, whether it's more capacity, higher performance, lower power consumption, more security, or greater reliability.
With speeds of 5400 RPM, the Momentus series brings quality and reliability to high-performance laptops, workstations, and gamer systems, as well as mainstream laptops, netbooks and external storage enclosures. Momentus drives are ideal for any consumer solution where robustness and data reliability are a necessity.
Momentus Series Technology Features
SmartAlign Technology for Easy 4K Migration
A change is coming to the hard drive industry. The smallest sector of organized data on a drive is moving from 512 to 4,096 bytes. The new format, known as Advanced Format (AF) 4K, offers advantages like increased efficiency, but migrating your drive can be challenging. Luckily, Seagate is ready to help you make a seamless transition to 4K sectors. Seagate's SmartAlign technology automatically does the work of AF migration in the background. The drive's performance is not affected, and there is no need for time-consuming utilities required by other AF-enabled drives.

-First being that the original hard drive in my PS3 is a Seagate, so if Sony trusts them so do it. I also decided to stick with 5400 rpms because that is the spec for all PS3s, and the 7200s have gotten some poor reviews for noise, heat, and no real gain in performance. Also I heard some 7200's are a little thicker than the 5400's therefore some do not actually fit in the PS3's expansion bay.
-Second, reviews (on another site) rated it very high, and nobody had had a problem with it. Also the prices on the SATA 2.5 inch drives have all gone down in the last few months so that was enough reason to make the investment. I highly recommend this hard drive for use with the PS3, it is quiet, runs cool, and was installed with ease.
INSTALLATION: If you are going to upgrade your hard drive use a #1 phillips screw driver (#2 is the most common) or you will strip the small screws that secure the drive to it's cradle. If you strip or bugger those screws you are looking at least a few weeks to order them from Playstation. Also, make sure you have a compatible (FAT32) USB flash drive so you can download the most recent update. I have used both Sony and SanDisk USB drives and they work fine.Read more ›
If You Want A Smooth Transition From Your Old PS3 HDD To A Larger 320GB HDD, Just Follow These Simple Steps:
First, Make Sure You Have An External Hard Drive That Is Large Enough To Backup and Store Your Old Data From Your Old PS3 HDD. Mine Was An 80GB HDD From My PS3. On Your Playstation 3 Settings Menu, Look For The Application That Says: System Settings. Next, Look For The One That Says: Backup Utility. From Here, You Must Backup Your Old PS3 Hard Drive System Data Onto An External HDD (Make Sure The External HDD Is Large Enough To Fit All Of Your Old PS3 HDD Data Before Removing The Old Hard Drive From Your System. Just Follow The Instructions On Backup Your PS3 Data. Depending On The Size Of Data On Your PS3 Old Drive, It May Take Between An Hour to 2 Hours. Once The Backup Is Complete, Shut Off The PS3 and Unplug It To Prevent Any Electrical Hazards or Damaged To Your Playstation 3 System.
Second, You'll Need Either A USB Flash Drive or Still Your External Hard Drive and A Computer For Making 2 Folders Called "UPDATE" and the Other Called "PS3" On Your Computer's Desktop. Internet Access For Downloading and Installing The Latest Firmware From SONY's Playstation Network WebSite: [...]
The Latest Firmware As Of July 14, 2011 Is 3.66.Read more ›
But, I wasn't lucky. The blinking light of death mocked me.
I wasn't about to spend at least $140 and weeks without my home entertainment center. So I bought this: PlayStation 3 160 GB and replaced the factory drive with the 320GB. In short, spending an extra $50 saved me an extra $50.
Note: The HDD harness from the 60GB chassis is not compatible with the 160GB model. It still requires removing one black-headed screw to get to the bay. Just remember to return the little plastic strip *before* returning the screw into its rightful place.
Go to the Playstation web site and download the O/S update.
Using a USB flash drive, make a directory named "PS3", underneath that, create a sub-directory named "UPDATE"
Make sure the directory names are capitalized.
Copy the single update file into the UPDATE folder.
Plug in a controller via a USB cable with the PS3.
Plug in the flash drive into the PS3 USB port, start the PS3 and read the prompts carefully.
(Don't just thumb through them. You'll need to hold specific keys down in unison for 5 seconds.)
Your new drive will format, and voila! A new high-capacity PS3.

Worked great as a replacement to my late 2011 Macbook Pro. Does need a cradle though, as without it the HD will wiggle around a little bit.Published 6 months ago by Kiaya Shellenberg
