1.0 out of 5 stars Simply put: It's an appalling hoax., February 20, 2007
Maxtor / Seagate should be ashamed of perpetrating this appalling hoax, the Maxtor Shared Storage II, on the SOHO market.

As other writers have indicated, if one side of the RAID 1 goes down, you're done. Your options are: have Maxtor ship you a new one (you can't keep your old hardware, so you've effectively lost both discs of your RAID, not just the one that failed) or, and this is according to Seagate's own Tier 2 engineers, you have to pay a data recovery service to get your data back for you.

There are no tools to rebuild the raid available. The box is sealed: you can't replace the drive yourself. There's no console available to access the Linux server running on the box.

The drives are fragile. Two months after buying this unit, the front panel LED began to blink, indicating a "RAID problem." I can't wait to see what kind of circus getting a new unit will be, just as soon as I figure out how to get my data of this piece of rubbish.

It's a sham, a hoax of a product and all concerned should be at least as embarrassed as I am to have fallen for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs., February 12, 2007
By Peter (Mont Albert, Victoria Australia) - See all my reviews
What a shame - looks good on paper. The power management does not work. It is not that easy to set up. And if it fails (which it did) it does not tell you (other than looking at the panel which may be in a cupboard) and cannot be repaired. So the RAID function is near useless.

Mine lasted 6 weeks. I now have my money back.

Avoid at all costs.

1.0 out of 5 stars IF YOU HAVE THIS DRIVE - BACK UP YOUR DATA AND RETURN IT ASAP, March 8, 2007
Under 1 month of use, and the drive failed. It sounds like a grandfather clock with the head trying to synch with the drive, and the green flashing light of death is on constantly. Seagate (who purchased Maxtor) qouted over the phone $2000 - $7000 for data recovery depending on how many of the internal drives failed. I also noticed the internal fan isn't even moving after inspecting why the drive heats up so quickly. This drive is now a $600 doorstop, containing a project that is worth about $50,000, and will take a couple thousand to recover. Welcome to the future of hard drives, where the companies sell these things for dirt cheap to sucker you into a purchase, so they can make the real money on multi-thousand dollar recovery services. Do yourself a favor, and buy a decent tape backup system. They should rename this drive to MAXTOR S*** STORAGE!
