I can still connect to the Seagate's wireless network and access it's files through a web-based app.

Bear in mind that a person who gets a bad device is 10 times more likely to complain than someone who gets one that just plain works.

I was able to transfer a ton of movies and music and photos over to it and now I can watch/listen to it all on my Iphone and Ipad.

Verified Purchase
<Update 1/2014 - I currently use a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 for all my portable computing and video needs, so I seldom use this drive as a wireless drive anymore. I mostly just plug it into my SP2 via USB and play my FHD WTV files to avoid the throughput problem and no longer need to bother with charging the battery anymore. In truth, using it as a wireless device for our Android phones was more trouble than it was worth, so we seldom actually used it. Too often video would stumble and it just got annoying.>

<Update 1/2013 - My wife recently purchased the Samsung Note 2 and the Smart Dock and now we only use this as a wired USB hard drive. Since most of what we use it for is watching FHD TV shows, the wireless speed was just not fast and reliable enough. It will still come in handle for slide shows tho and watching DVD quality movies on the road.>

This review got a bit lengthy so first off, the short version:

If all you want to do is play your entertainment files on WiFi device(s) and your files are supported by the Seagate Media App, then this works like a charm and you do not need to read the detailed review below. All you need to do is:

1) plug it into the USB wall wart and let the battery charge
2) plug it into a USB port on your computer
3) upload your files
4) unplug it from your computer (you cannot do a USB connection and WiFi at the same time)
5) push the on button on this hard drive and wait 50 seconds for the WiFi software to load up
6) download the Seagate Media App
7) on your device, connect to the Seagate Wireless WiFi network
8) open the Seagate App and play your file

The supported files are (straight from their user guide):
For iPads

Dear ChicagoCPA,

This reply is from Seagate Support. This response is from Seagate Support and we'd like to thank you for your review of the Wireless Plus Mobile Device. We are glad that you are enjoying the drive. We wanted to provide a centralized link for help with setup, installation, and troubleshooting of your Wireless Plus. This also provides our complete Users Guide as well. Please reference the link below:

The wireless speed from the device may vary depending on a number for factors. If you have multiple users or a concurrent connection to the internet at the same time, it may slow the connection speed. There are other factors as well listed in the following support article here under the subtitle "Check your connection."

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/219411en

We appreciate your suggestion regarding miniUSB port for power and we will pass that along.

You can upload multiple files to the Wireless Plus if you wish. Here are instructions on page 19 of our Users Guide:
(Wirelessly Uploading Content From a Computer to Your Seagate Wireless Plus Device)

If you are experiencing any stuttering while playing media content, please reference the following support article under the subtitle "If the video is choppy or stuttering...."

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Plug and Play

When you go someplace where you can't access your media or document files from your Cloud, and they aren't stored on your device, what options do you have? One option would be to take along your Seagate Wireless.

This comes with no instruction booklet, but it doesn't need one. I took it out of the box, found the on/off button, pushed it, and after about a minute was presented with the Seagates wireless network, to which I connected my laptop.

I then opened my browser, and the Seagate menu opened. From there, I was able to choose from four categories: videos, photos, music, or documents. All that remained for me to do was upload my files. I enjoyed the preloaded videos and music, then uploaded some of my own files by simply dragging and dropping them into the appropriate partitions. And all this was done without wires, not even an a/c cord.

The little quickstart guide is the only written guide that is included. It directs you to push the on/off button, then directs you to the Seagate website to download the Seagate app for your mobile device.

I let this run continuously for three hours before I decided to connect the power cord to charge it up. It took an hour to fully charge. Then I connected the included USB 3 cable from the Seagate to my laptop, and over the course of two hours it downloaded a complete backup of my entire hard drive, as a speed test. It passed with flying colors.

You and two family members can all stream separate videos from this at the same time. Or you can take your iPad and this on your next flight and have a large choice of movies. Or if you have a huge collection of movies, store them all on this and save your hard drive for other things. This 1TB drive can hold up to 500 full length movies.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Update: 1/29/13 Received an email response today from a support ticket I submitted 5 days ago. No instructions, tips, or suggestions. Just "Please elaborate on the connection not being stable?" So what, now I have to wait another 5 days? So I went back to Seagate support page to look for answers and tried online chat. First time it sat there for at least 10 minutes. Had to refill the form, finally got a person who said I needed to call. Called the number after a few minutes the guy started yelling at me because I said connection wasn't working he said but I was connected, blah, blah, blah. Finally he asked me what the firmware version was. Turns out I had the wrong one - for another device - which I got by following links that told me to update! Ironically, the firmware files are named the same even though they are for different devices. The only difference is the version number! It works at this moment. If I have any future problems I will report back. We shouldn't be surprised, I have several Seagate products. As long as they work they are great. But if you have trouble and need support it can turn into a lot of wasted time. By the way, there is no way (according to support) to find out what IP address it obtained or other specifics that help in diagnostics.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Update: 1/25/13 The more I use this the worse it seems to get. Connection is off and on. When it is connected to my Kindle Fire sometimes movies play other times it just locks up. As cool as this device is I can't recommend it until the connection issues are fixed.

OK, on the cover of the box it shows a guy out hiking and he stops to watch movies. Really?

Dear SMXSteve,

This reply is from Seagate Support and we'd like to thank you for taking the time to review the Seagate Wireless Plus. We did want to take an opportunity to address some of your concerns.

It is normal for the connection between your device and the Wireless Plus to temporarily disconnect when joining to another wireless signal. However, the connection between your device and the Wireless Plus should restore shortly after successfully joining the other wireless signal.

The drive has a feature called Download and Stream. This allows you to begin playing the file while it continues to download to your device. Once the movie has completed downloading to your device, it places the drive in a sleep state to preserve battery life. Once a device tries to connect to the Wireless Plus, the drive wakes. Please note, disabling Download and Stream in the settings may reduce battery run-time. In some cases this may be necessary, and does not harm the Wireless Plus.

We'll pass along the feedback regarding device orientation locks and the app to the developers.

If you have further questions or concerns you can reach us at the Contact Us page below. We'll gladly assist you with these. We've created a case using the name you've used here on Amazon.
