My first attempt to connect to my home wifi did not succeed and in order to get it to work, I had to use the option to reset the device to factory settings.

The first thing I tried was my iPhone but immediately I got a message that said the firmware for the Seagate needs to be updated.

<Update 1/2014 - I currently use a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 for all my portable computing and video needs, so I seldom use this drive as a wireless drive anymore. I mostly just plug it into my SP2 via USB and play my FHD WTV files to avoid the throughput problem and no longer need to bother with charging the battery anymore. In truth, using it as a wireless device for our Android phones was more trouble than it was worth, so we seldom actually used it. Too often video would stumble and it just got annoying.>

<Update 1/2013 - My wife recently purchased the Samsung Note 2 and the Smart Dock and now we only use this as a wired USB hard drive. Since most of what we use it for is watching FHD TV shows, the wireless speed was just not fast and reliable enough. It will still come in handle for slide shows tho and watching DVD quality movies on the road.>

This review got a bit lengthy so first off, the short version:

If all you want to do is play your entertainment files on WiFi device(s) and your files are supported by the Seagate Media App, then this works like a charm and you do not need to read the detailed review below. All you need to do is:

1) plug it into the USB wall wart and let the battery charge
2) plug it into a USB port on your computer
3) upload your files
4) unplug it from your computer (you cannot do a USB connection and WiFi at the same time)
5) push the on button on this hard drive and wait 50 seconds for the WiFi software to load up
6) download the Seagate Media App
7) on your device, connect to the Seagate Wireless WiFi network
8) open the Seagate App and play your file

The supported files are (straight from their user guide):
For iPads

The wireless speed from the device may vary depending on a number for factors. If you have multiple users or a concurrent connection to the internet at the same time, it may slow the connection speed. There are other factors as well listed in the following support article here under the subtitle "Check your connection."

We appreciate your suggestion regarding miniUSB port for power and we will pass that along.

You can upload multiple files to the Wireless Plus if you wish. Here are instructions on page 19 of our Users Guide:
(Wirelessly Uploading Content From a Computer to Your Seagate Wireless Plus Device)

Plug and Play

When you go someplace where you can't access your media or document files from your Cloud, and they aren't stored on your device, what options do you have? One option would be to take along your Seagate Wireless.

This comes with no instruction booklet, but it doesn't need one. I took it out of the box, found the on/off button, pushed it, and after about a minute was presented with the Seagates wireless network, to which I connected my laptop.

I then opened my browser, and the Seagate menu opened. From there, I was able to choose from four categories: videos, photos, music, or documents. All that remained for me to do was upload my files. I enjoyed the preloaded videos and music, then uploaded some of my own files by simply dragging and dropping them into the appropriate partitions. And all this was done without wires, not even an a/c cord.

The little quickstart guide is the only written guide that is included. It directs you to push the on/off button, then directs you to the Seagate website to download the Seagate app for your mobile device.

I let this run continuously for three hours before I decided to connect the power cord to charge it up. It took an hour to fully charge. Then I connected the included USB 3 cable from the Seagate to my laptop, and over the course of two hours it downloaded a complete backup of my entire hard drive, as a speed test. It passed with flying colors.

You and two family members can all stream separate videos from this at the same time. Or you can take your iPad and this on your next flight and have a large choice of movies. Or if you have a huge collection of movies, store them all on this and save your hard drive for other things. This 1TB drive can hold up to 500 full length movies.

Right out of the block, I want to be clear that I admire the SEAGATE WIRELESS PLUS and what it promises: 1TB of battery-powered WiFi goodness. But there are a number of strings attached to that promise, and users should know about them in advance.

First, the SEAGATE WIRELESS PLUS does seem to work as advertised. I was able to stream 4 720p shows that I had encoded for iPads to 4 different devices simultaneously. Those devices were an iPad 2, 2 iPad Minis, and a Windows 8 Uberlaptop. Things were a less happy, but still worked when I streamed 1 720p file to those 4 devices. In that case, 1 mini and the laptop lost connection and had to start the stream over. After some stuttering, they all played the file smoothly and in glorious HD. So success! I can definitely, see this coming in handy on long trips in the car.

Also, I have said in other reviews of Seagate products, I love the interchangeable backplane that allows you to plug in whatever interface you need. The USB 3.0 interface is included and works as simply as you'd expect.

Now for the drama.

As others have said, there's precious little set up information included, even on the drive itself. I agree that Seagate seems to want this drive to be Applesque in its simplicity, but just isn't. And the degree to which that statement is true depends on your device. If you're connecting to Apple devices, then it is easier to use than if you're connecting to Windows devices. In part, that's because there's an App for that. When I search for such an app in the godawful Windows App Store, there's nothing. So the experience is going to be different.

THINGS TO KNOW.

- On the Apple device, you have to download Seagate Media from the App Store.

Dear Karen Joan,

This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to apologize for the problems experienced with your Wireless Plus drive. We wanted to provide a centralized link for help with setup, installation, and troubleshooting of your Wireless Plus. This also provides our complete Users Guide as well. Please reference the link below:

We are aware of the firmware update message appearing and are working to provide a fix.

The Wireless Plus is designed to shut down wifi connectivity when the USB port is in use, as the USB transfer provides faster transfer rates.

Please verify that the router is configured properly. We have the following knowledge base article available that contains steps for troubleshooting video playback issues:

http://ow.ly/hj5Ud

There are limitations to what Apple shares with other companies when it comes to development. Because of this we have created our own viewer.

For best performance while using the drive in concurrent mode, please visit page 9 of Wireless Plus user guide:

http://ow.ly/hefx3

The Wireless Plus drive was designed to provide streaming media to mobile devices. For information about NAS drives that include different features, please visit:
