Editorial Reviews

Review

"...The descriptions of routes and facilities at harbors around the world makes this book useful to anyone, skipper or crew, interested in sailing." -- Santana Magazine

"Consider yourselves lucky. If The Seagoing Hitchhiker's Handbook had been out fifteen years ago, there may not have been a Latitude 38." -- Latitude 38 Magazine

"Greg Becker's Seagoing Hitchhiker's Handbook is an encyclopedic guide to obtaining crewing positions aboard voyaging sailboats that combines copious research with Becker's own first-hand experience. In addition to useful lists of visa requirements, sailing schools, and marinas located along the best-traveled cruising routes, Becker also offers more subjective advice that aspiring crew would do well to heed--advice about the social conventions in the typical captain/crew relationship that to ignore could end in serious complications.

This is a useful guide for anyone seeking waterborne travel across the world's oceans. With a few basic skills, the ability to sell yourself and this book in hand, it can be done." -- Cruising World Magazine

"It holds a wealth of valuable information." -- The American Sailing Association

5.0 out of 5 stars This book tells you why to do it, and most importantly HOW, November 9, 2001
This review is from: The Seagoing Hitchhiker's Handbook : Roaming the Earth on Other People's Yachts (Paperback)
When reading the first few chapters of this book, Becker describes living the "high-life" normally reserved for the rich and priveledged. A life of sailing around the world on a seemingly endless vacation, stopping in exotic locales of the South Pacific, Caribbean, Red Sea and Meditterean to absorb the rich culture as well as partake in various water sports in their ideal locations. While the first chapter is only around 20 pages or so, it took me an hour to get through it, because I kept putting down the book and conjuring up endless possible scenarios of this sort of paradise. When I did get through it though, I felt I was ready to quit the ratrace and take an extended vacation like I've taken before.

Becker certainly gives enough information to do just that- and then some. Greg walks you through each vital step of landing a place on a yacht and he gives you invaluable hints to succeed at each one of them. When you land your first yacht, you certainly want to keep this book with you as it has a vast and !USEFUL! database of marinas all over the globe. I think it's also important to point out that Greg recognizes and addresses the fact that there are many ways to go about this, whether you want to get formal training in sailing or just learn as you go, whether you want to start from the states or in some other foreign country, the scope of this book more than adequately addresses the prospective hitchhiker's major options.

If this sounds interesting to you at all, GET THIS BOOK! It not only serves as a marvelous introduction to a unique and fulfilling life, but also is a great reference, even for the seasoned veteran.

This book is great, but don't buy anything from Amazon. Your local bookstore can order this book in just a couple of days and you will help keep the small guy in business. Make a vow to yourself not to be lazy!
