Seagull Performer CW QI Guitar in Flame Maple HG – Performance & Price in One

The Seagull Performer QI acoustic-electric guitar features a 3-layer hardwood laminated body and a solid spruce top for a superb blend of rich tones. The guitar also has an integrated set neck joint and, Indian rosewood fretboard and bridge, and a Quantum I pickup for a great plugged-in experience. This is an excellent guitar for the price you pay. Seagull guitars are known for their treble thus if you are playing in a band, it cuts right through and gives you the performance you need.

Performer Series

The Performer Series features beautiful Flame Maple back & sides on its Cutaway Dreadnought, CW Folk and CW Mini-Jumbo models. The Performer Series also includes select pressure tested solid spruce tops, flame maple veneer headstocks, a custom polished high-gloss finish, Quantum 1 electronics and embroidered gig bag. The ideal package for the gigging musician.

Compound Curve Top Design

The guitar top is the part of the instrument that most affects the sound. It is also the most delicate part of any high quality acoustic guitar. The grade and thickness of the wood used (solid spruce), as well as the bracing structure, have a huge impact on the instrument's sound. The idea of applying an arch or a curve to the top is appealing because the added strength of an arched top should allow for the use of a thinner and more lightly braced top. While this is true, there remains a trade-off in applying a curve to the entire top. The most active part of the top is the area centered on the bridge. Applying a curve to this part of the top restricts movement resulting in a loss of dynamic range. On the other hand, the area of the top above the sound hole moves minimally but is problematic because it tends to sink if the guitar dries out even slightly. This tendency is also encouraged by downward pressure from the fingerboard resting on top of it. The solution is a top that has a compound curve.

In the Seagull Performer's design the top is arched slightly in the area above the sound hole and levels out in the area around the bridge. The compound curve top produces excellent stability in the upper part of the guitar top and the power and projection made possible by leaving the top flat below the sound hole flat. With the weak area above the sound hole stabilized, it is possible to make the rest of the top even more active with a new bracing design that allows unprecedented control over the top vibration. The bracing for the Seagull Performer Cutaway Flame Maple High-Gloss QI Guitar is quarter-sawn spruce, scalloped and carved to conform exactly to the curvature of the tops.

A History of Quality

In 1982 Robert Godin and a few friends produced the first Seagull guitars in the Village of LaPatrie, Quebec. The concept for the Seagull guitar was to take the essential components of the best hand-crafted guitars (such as solid tops and beautiful finishes) and build these features into guitars that could be priced within the reach of working musicians. Of course there is much more to a great guitar than a solid top with a special finish, so we produced this illustrated guide to help you gain some understanding of the basic elements of a great sounding acoustic guitar.

The Seagull story wouldn't be complete without mentioning La Patrie. La Patrie is a small village in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This is where the first Seagulls were made in the early eighties. Today, La Patrie has a population of about 475 and about half of these people are guitar builders. These folks take a great deal of pride in the guitars they build. Pick one up and you'll see why.

(EDIT 1/7/2013) - [Second edit, sorry - the following mentioned video is now attached as a video review -- I wanted to add in that I did a recording using this guitar which is on YouTube. If you search "Brett Llewellyn Guster Happier" you will easily find it. It has mostly strumming, with a little bit of fingerpicking at the very end, but is the guitar directly plugged into our interface. There was a very, very slight amount of distortion added to the guitar, but it's hardly noticeable. I feel this is one of the better sounding audio that I've found online with this guitar and thought it could be helpful.]

Alternatively I also recently recorded a sample of the guitar instrumental piece, Ocean, by John Butler using this guitar which can be found on my SoundCloud page by googling "Brett Llewellyn Soundcloud ocean sample." This piece is completely fingerpicked and a bit more demanding on the guitar. I hadn't played it in awhile so it's far from perfect but it gives a good idea of how the guitar sounds plugged in. I added a small amount of delay in the beginning and reverb in the rest of the song, but nothing that really changes the tone of the guitar.

I do not intend to advertise myself in anyway with these, I only wish to better show the superb sound that comes from this guitar.

Review:
I've owned a Seagull S6 Slim for over 7 years now. Along the way of my guitar journey, I also picked up a 12 string Takamine G Series (EG523SC-12). Both guitars are unique in their sound, but my Seagull still ends up being my go-to guitar despite the nearly twice as expensive 12 string.

Great guitar, super quality and nice sized neck width. Super sound. Lifetime warranty is nice too. It's a pleasure to play such a well crafted instrument and so thoughtfully designed. Same parent company as Art and Lutherie guitars-Made in Canada. A worthwhile investment without melting your cards!

This is my 2nd seagull guitar. I loved my acoustic mini jumbo so much that I wanted to get a seagull acoustic/electric. This seagull guitar lived up to my expectations. It's well made, stays in tune and sounds wonderful. Everyone who has tried my seagull guitars all agree that they are exceptional and some went on to buy their own. These guitars are hand made in Canada are not poorly constructed guitars made in China. I highly recommend buying this guitar or other seagulls.
