One of the great Scottish folk groups,

This review is from: Seal Song (Audio CD)
Ossian (not to be confused with the likewise-defunct Irish group Oisín) were one of the great bands of the Scottish folk revival of the '70s and '80s, drawing on the tradition as Planxty, the Bothy band and Dé Dannan did around the same time in Ireland. Between 1977 and 1986 they made six albums:Ossian (1977) St. Kilda Wedding (1978) Seal Song (1981) Dove Across the Water (1982) Borders (1984) Light on a Distant Shore (1986) All the band were skilled multi-instrumentalists, and the sheer variety of the arrangements on these albums is astonishing. "Seal Song" was their first album with Tony Cuffe, one of my favourite singers (and also a terrific guitarist, whose influence I can hear clearly on Tony McManus). "The Road to Drumleman" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. All these albums are worth going out of your way to obtain. P.S. I have coded all the names of the albums as Product Links, so those listed here should show up in blue. |
