Best Seal Novel,
By A Customer
This review is from: Seal Team One (Paperback)
Dick Couch was a REAL navy Seal officer, (vs the usual phoneys who are crawling out of the woodwork). This is probably the best novel ever written about Viet Nam seal operations. I rate it up there with "The Element of Surprise" with "Element" being possible the best non-fiction book. Couch's other fiction books are , unfortunatly not as good.

This was a bit slow to start, but quickly evolved into a book that was difficult to put down. It did an excellent job of describing combat situations that could only be handled by individuals as tough and tenacious as Navy SEALs. I rate it as one of the best military action books I've had the pleasure to read in a long time. In fact, I 've made it a point to seek out other books by this author.

Captain Couch mentions in his introduction (updated from the original) that he felt this, his first effort, was his best. He may be right. This is the first book of his that I've read and it is excellent. I'm currently working on his "Sheriff of Ramadi" - his latest effort. Since I'm only in the third chapter, I'm not ready to review this book but so far, it's pretty dry. As for "Seal Team One", the semi-fictional (more fact than fiction in my opinion) story of a Seal team in country is fascinating and an eye opener. Since I was in the Navy in the same area during the same period (and beyond), I can relate to the story quite easily. I was not a Seal and this story is an excellent description of another war that was going on at the same time and in the same place as the war I fought. But if the reader is not former military or has no combat experience (give a prayer of thanks), this book will still make a terrific introduction to the soul of a warrior. You will enjoy it.

After reading this book, I gave it to a friend, who was a SEAL starting in 1969, in Vietnam. I come from a long line of veterans, myself included, and have many friends/family who served in Nam, so I have a great appreciation for the sacrifices our military makes. The SEALs are a cut-above (and part crazy), however. My friend was trained under some of the instructors in the book, so he can attest to the training. I thought the book was well written, and going by my friend's comments, pretty accurate and not embellished. Being a SEAL is definitely not a glamorous job with little praise or acknowledgment, but thank God for these guys...they get the job done and leave no man behind.

Eye-opener,

This is the first book I've read from this author, but I will definitely be reading more. Fictional story on a Navy SEAL team in Viet Nam, but really opened my eyes to a war that was before my time. It kept me interested. Because of this book I am going to read more of this type of book, even though it was tough subject matter, I really really liked it.

I've bought and read and throughly enjoyed everything Couch has written. This was his first and I think his best (fiction). Buy this. Read it, then buy another. That's what I did. Now I'm sitting here waiting for him to write another.

I have read several of Dick Couch's later fiction and non-fiction books, and found the all enjoyable. This is Dick's first book. If you are a Seal Team fan this book is for you. It traces a fictional Navy ensign through training and onward to Vietnam. It is based partially on the author's experience and additional tales from fellow Seals. It's Good reading!!

The book is fact based fiction. Excellent reading for anyone who served in Vietnam. I've read most of the author's other books and what sets this apart is it's flow and readability. Highly recommended.
