This review is from: The Seals ([King crime]) (Hardcover)
This is one very weird book! On a remote island off the coast of Scotland, a fanatical religious sect is building what they call an eternal city out of the local stone, which they are hewing by hand. Detective Superintendent James Pibble has been summoned to the island by a letter from his late father's former employer, Nobel Prize winning scientist, Sir Francis Francis, who claims that he is being held prisoner there and is demanding that Pibble comes to his rescue. The old man is suffering from Addison's disease which causes fits of exhaustion and, aided by his naturally virulent hatred of his fellow mwn, makes for a very unpleasant, autocratic old man. The monks of this sect are holding Francis so that they may reap the profits from a biography he has written, and are not at all keen to see him leave. After a few close calls with "accidents", Pibble manages to get Francis, and a couple of so-called nuns off the island but, in all, it's a weird book with not very believable characters....thankfully, a quick read!
