4.0 out of 5 stars Sealy Soybean Foam-Core
I just recently purchased this mattress after a lot of research. In my search I had a hard time deciding whether this mattress was truly organic and without chemicals. The cover is made of vinyle-laminate which is the only part of this mattress thats makes it not completely organic. Sealy does however state that the cover although vinyl-laminate is phthalate and...

I ordered this mattress for our nursery because I thought the soybean foam would be more eco-friendly and have less off-gassing than typical foam mattresses. I knew that the outside was vinyl, which I didn't like. However, the low price and all the excellent reviews convinced me to buy anyways. When I got the mattress, it was as pictured and in good condition, with no smell, so I got rid of the box. I also like that it is firm and very light-weight.

Now, a few weeks later and I'm actually getting the crib ready, I see the tag says 27% cotton felt and 73% Polyurethane foam. Not a single mention of soy or soybean on the label. So I did a little more research into soy-based foams, and it turns out that companies can call their foam "Soybean-based" even if it has as little as 5% soy in it. Nowhere online can I find exactly how much of this mattress is made of soybean foam.

If I had kept all the packaging, I would be returning this for something that has a fabric shell and is more honest in the description. Unfortunately, I can't, so I am stuck with it because we can't afford to buy another mattress. If you are thinking of buying, just be aware of what you are actually getting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sealy Soybean Foam-Core, October 17, 2010

This review is from: Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress (Baby Product)
I just recently purchased this mattress after a lot of research. In my search I had a hard time deciding whether this mattress was truly organic and without chemicals. The cover is made of vinyle-laminate which is the only part of this mattress thats makes it not completely organic. Sealy does however state that the cover although vinyl-laminate is phthalate and flammability compliant and does not contain toxic fire retardants. Sealy makes the exact same mattress called the Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Dream which is made with a cotton cover. I was able to find this mattress at Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Baby websites fot about 160$ plus shipping. Sealy's website is also helpful at [...]. I am overall happy with this mattress and its practicality.

Here are the specs from Sealys web site:

*Soy based foam-core offers improved durability over conventional foams and uses renewable resources resulting in the use of less crude oils.
*Soybean foam is CertiPUR-US® certified and has been tested for indoor air emissions, durability and substances including phthalates, formaldehyde, PBDEs, lead and other chemicals
*Entire cover and lock-stitched binding wipe clean preventing allergens from clinging to the mattress
*Lightweight making it easy to change sheets
*Soybeans are a renewable resource grown in the USA
*Cover is wet-resistant and cleans easily
*Square cut corners provides snug fit in cribs
*Mattress also fits toddler bed frames
*Lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials
*Entire mattress is phthalate and flammability compliant and does not contain toxic fire retardants

5.0 out of 5 stars nice product, fairly ecoconscious, August 3, 2009

This review is from: Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress (Baby Product)
This mattress seems to hit a nice median point in terms of being earth friendly, safe for your child, and reasonably priced. I did some research and found that this little mattress was able to provide the best safety from harmful chemicals in the middle price range. It was(is) neither too expensive nor cheap. I think it was $150.00. It does have a plastic casing which makes it not totally safe, but better than the average. My baby girl sleeps well on it and I sleep better knowing she is as safe - as safe as I can make her without buying a $400.00 mattress.

5.0 out of 5 stars great mattress!, June 6, 2009
This review is from: Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress (Baby Product)
this is a wonderful mattress. we have been using it for 8 months. we bought it for our second child. it is firm and doesn't start to sway in the middle at all. i especially like that it is very lightweight..i have no trouble lifting it to change the crib sheet at all like i did with the sealy we had. i'm sure my husband appreciates that bit. I would definitely recommend this mattress..however, the price of 140.00 on amazon is waaaaay too much. we got ours at walmart with site to store shipping for a total of 80.00!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tested by Baby, January 14, 2010

I am giving this mattress a five star rating, because, even though my three month old son won't sleep the night in his crib, he has at least stopped bawling whenever I put him down in it since I replaced his old mattress with the Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress. The mattress is firm and sturdy without feeling like a board and sheets go on easily. The squared off edges create a snug fit thus eliminating any gaps between mattress and crib frame. The fact that my son will even nap on this thing earns a thumbs up from me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great firm mattress for moms paranoid about SIDS, January 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress (Baby Product)
I ordered this mattress not because I am extremely eco to the point of buying organic soy everything, but because it seemed to be one of the firmer, more high-quality mattresses. (I know it's paranoid, but I don't want to take any risks with my baby suffocating.) I ordered it with free Prime shipping through the Amazon Mom deal, and it arrived in 2 days.

It appears to be excellent quality. It is indeed nice and firm, and seems durable and well-made. It has a kind of plastic casing, but it isn't a loose or crinkly plastic casing, it's a nice material that will simply make the mattress easy to clean if the baby's diaper leaks or he spits up. There is no strange smell or anything. From the photos, I was afraid the mattress was going to be really thin, but it is actually quite thick, probably a good 6 inches. But it's still nice and light to move or flip over.

I also ordered the Stork Craft Tuscany 4-in-1 Stages Crib, and the mattress fits perfectly in that crib, really snugly with no gaps whatsoever.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sinking Mattress, October 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress (Baby Product)
We bought this mattress because of the Sealy brand and the reputation that usually follows their products but wow are we disappointed. Our newborn twins, who came home weighing less than 6 lbs each have already made a large indention in the middle of these mattresses. They sleep separately so it's pretty obvious of a less than quality product since we have two side by side. As they have gained weight, the mattresses have sunk more and more, even with flipping the mattress periodically hoping to even things out. I would not recommend this mattress to anyone planning to have a newborn sleep in it if they plan to grow their baby more than 16 ounces.

this mattress had really good reviews, which is what sold me, but despite the 4.5 star review this foam mattress is a total waste of time and money. we haven't even had it one month yet and it is already sagging/dipping in the middle. for a 4 month old baby who is trying to roll over this is not going to work because he can't get out of the dip. i'm going to return it and spend the extra on a REAL mattress.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy with the mattress!, December 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress (Baby Product)
We bought this product 2 weeks ago.So far we've been very happy with it.Our baby enjoys his new crib a lot.The shift from the bassinet to a crib was very easy and our 5-month-er wakes up every day with a big smile on his face.
Always wanted the best for the baby,I have spent months searching for the best crib,mattress,stroller,...My husband found this mattress in 2 seconds.I wanted to go with the more expensive organic one but had to buy within the budget. We think Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress is a good choice. It is Eco-friendly and phthalate and flammability compliant and does not contain toxic fire retardants. We were worried that if the cover is made of vinyle-laminate it is going to have some plastic smell. That appeared not to be true.Although we did air it out for a night just in case.We are going to buy a cotton water resistant cover for the future use.The mattress is really light,I can change the sheets without my husbands help.We have a Davinci Reagan 4 in 1 crib and it fits snugly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great crib mattress, very pleased with the firmness and lightness, April 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress (Baby Product)
I am one of those moms that love everything healthy and organic for their baby and my friends have gone as far as to say I was obsessed with my baby only having the best. So I first ordered the L A Baby Organic Cotton 2 in One Orthopedic Crib Mattress but felt that it wasn't as firm as what I liked and decided to give this Soybean foam a try.

After trying out and swapping each mattress many times, I'm so glad that I did and decided to keep this Soybean Foam Mattress, because it is firmer and lighter.

To explain firmer, first the baby sleeps deeply and fine on both mattresses, but on the firmer soy foam mattress, the baby would sleep with the face turned right or left, but on the organic cotton spring, the baby would sleep with face up making the back of the head flat, and during tummy time, the baby likes the firmer mattress because it is easier for her to push up and not sunken in, and when the baby lay face down on the soybean foam, her face is also either to the right or left which I believe is safer. When on the spring mattress, she at times would have the face sunk in bed facing down and takes her a bit more effort to get herself out.

As for lighter, I believe the soy foam is probably 10 times lighter then the cotton spring mattress. I can't change the sheet of the spring mattress on my own without a helping hand. But I was able to change the sheet on my own using the soy foam mattress.

I feel both products deserve 5 star reviews for quality, craftsmanship and value, but I'm giving the organic spring mattress a 4 because it wasn't as firm as I was expecting and will give this soybean mattress a full 5 star for the points I mentioned.
