Book Description

Cowboys April 1999
In the West there's only two kinds of women--the wives, mothers, daughters and the good-time girls. It is said that Pearl Belladonna could show a man the best time ever, but Sean O'Ryan hasn't come to the gold fields looking for a floozy. He wants gold to buy a ranch, and a virtuous woman to make a wife. The sensual barroom singer might tempt his body and tease his mind, but she isn't for him. From her red curls to her assumed name, nothing about her seems real until a glimpse into her heart convinces Sean that the lady is indeed a pearl beyond price.

Review

A man with a grudge against a certain type of woman... A woman with a secret in her past she'd dearly like to protect... Leigh Greenwood is back with another book in The Cowboys series that started with Jake. This time, we get to read Sean's story. Sean O'Ryan has one goal in mind: to get enough gold from the Colorado gold mines to be able to start his own ranch. Orphaned as an infant and rejected by his only relative- an aunt whose dancing career came first- Sean's only family are Jake and Isabelle Maxwell and the other orphans they adopted. He wants to have something of his own and he has no intention of involving himself with the attractive owner of the local saloon. No matter how beautiful or tempting she might be, she reminds him too much of the aunt who didn't want him. Pearl Belladonna has reinvented herself. After being abandoned by the man she thought loved her, farm girl Agnes Satterwaite from St. Louis turned herself into the famous and adored Pearl, proprietor, dancer and singer at the Silken Lady. She's independent and self-sufficient, qualities no man can take away from her- except the one man who destroyed her life years ago. Now, Pearl must protect herself and her secret, even if it means sacrificing kindhearted Sean O'Ryan to do it. The Cowboys promises to become another treasured series from the popular and prolific Leigh Greenwood. In Sean, Colorado gold mining country is the setting. In addition to the western authenticity, it's always a pleasure to read a Leigh Greenwood novel because the characters are unique and memorable. Sean and Pearl are as tough as their surroundings, but both hide a heart of gold. This book rivals the best this author has written so far, and readers will want to make space on their keeper shelves for Sean. While you're at it, you might want to save room for the other Cowboys as well! Leigh Greenwood delivers another marvelous western tale! Sean is western romance at its finest! Leigh Greenwood continues to be a shining star of the genre! If you like your romance with a dash of western hospitality, Leigh Greenwood has the series for you. Here's hoping The Cowboys go on for many, many more years! Kristina Wright -- Copyright © 030199 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read despite the formula, March 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sean (Cowboys) (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading a dozen inane romance novels, how wonderful it was to stumble across Leigh Greenwood's Cowboys series! He uses tight plots, interesting characters, balanced couples, and the atmosphere of the West seems to spark every scene. They are a delight to read -- with one caveat. Space out your reading, for apparently they all have the same general plot, even the same sex scene. After reading three at once, I was able to point to sections in the fourth book and say, "covetous neighbor introduced here," "first sex scene here," "kidnapping here," and know that the woman would say "please" during the sex, which seems to consist of the same foreplay each time. It's fine to have a formula if it works well, and Mr. Greenwood's formula certainly does! Again, I emphasize how exciting and well-written (and crafted) his books are. But just don't read them all together or you'll get a serious case of deja vu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Greenwood's best book yet!, February 1, 1999
This review is from: Sean (Cowboys) (Mass Market Paperback)
Leigh Greenwood has outdone himself with Sean. Sean O'Ryan is a force to be reckoned with. His strong Irish character makes him the perfect hero. Even though he was orphaned as a child and turned away by his Aunt, he found good fortune when adopted by Jake and Isabell. Now as a grown man he is determined to find enough gold in the fields of Colorado to buy himself a ranch and find the perfect wife. But Pearl Belladonna can't be that woman. She is a woman who owns a saloon and flaunts herself in front of rowdy men every night for money. Okay, so she is the most beautiful thing he's ever seen with her flaming red hair (from a bottle) and her her lowcut dresses, but she's a <loose woman.> Definitely not his type. But in spite of his good intentions his heart has other plans. Pearl has a heart of gold more valuable than any he can find in the fields. Throw in a too charming crooked gambler named Rock and a few gunshots and you have a story! With lies, robbery and deciet, Sean doesn't know if he can ever forgive Pearl, but his love is tested to the limits when she is arrested and he learns that her daughter has been kidnapped. Like any perfect hero he comes to the rescue and saves the day. This book is filled with passion, fun, and the purest kind of unconditional love. Sean is a must read for all Greenwood fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars I like the character of Sean, but the book is a let down., April 25, 1999
This review is from: Sean (Cowboys) (Mass Market Paperback)
Sean's characerter is one any woman would love. But to match him with someone like Pearl was a real disappointment. You have to wait six months for these books, and I really felt let down. I really felt like Sean deserved a better woman and story than what he got. Jake and the Randolph series was a lot better. I hope Leigh Greenwood goes back to his old style of writing for the next book.
