Joan Lowery Nixon - Mystery

Lauren lives with her aunt Melvamay in a small town in Texas. Lauren's mother died when she was four and was then raised by her aunt. Her father was drafted into the army and was killed in a truck accident. Lauren also shares her house with Sara Martin whose mother sent her away to live in Lauren's town. One day Roberta Campion, a girl who says she can contact the dead, decides to have a séance with ten other girls. Lauren and Sara are two of the ten who get invited. Sara said she would use the séance as a distraction while she sneaks out of town with another man. When they arrive, Roberta turns off the lights and lights a candle. When all is quiet Sara screams out in distress and is never seen again. The next morning she is found dead in a pond that resides in the Thicket. After a period of time another girl from the séance is murdered. Lauren needs to figure out what happened - or she could be next.
Joan Nixon's writing makes you sit on the edge of your at times and thankfully provides sighs of relief at other times. Once you get ten or so pages into the book she makes you not want to stop. Every chapter keeps you asking questions, but those questions are always answered later.
I liked this book because it was very action-packed and provided puzzles you needed to solve. This book does not have a deep meaningful plot. If you like books that are packed with action, keep you on the edge of your seat and make you want to know what happens next, then this is your book.

"The Seance" by Joan Lowery Nixon was very good. Nixon never fails to bewilder me with her writing talents. Unfortuantely, out of the four books that I've read by Nixon so far, "The Seance" has been my least favorite. The book would be a lot more interesting if it was more fast-paced. Instead, the book drags along, barely keeping you interested, until the last few chapters...

The story is about a group of girls who get together one night and have a seance. They think it's all fun and games until one of the girls, Sara, starts to act very strange and the lamp plug is pulled out. When the lights are turned back on, Sara is missing. To make matters even more strange, both doors are locked, and Sara is found dead the next morning...Lauren is the main character. Sara lived with Lauren and her aunt as a foster child. Everyone thinks that Sara ran off with somebody and told Lauren her plan. And, after another girl is found dead, Lauren starts to suspect that whoever killed Sara is after her, thinking that she knows their identity...Will Lauren be able to figure out who Sara was meeting that night? Or will she be murdered before she can piece together the clues? Find out in "The Seance..."

Have you ever had a Seance with your friends for fun? After reading this novel, it will never be the same. The Seance is suspenseful and creepy. Keep the lights on and the doors lock and cuddle tight under the covers as you read this scary novel. I highly recommend!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a fast-paced thriller, January 3, 2002

A Review by Jessica
I wouldn't quit call this book a fast-paced thriller or that it would keep you up all night. I agree that it wasn't a bad book and that it was pretty good but not a severely scary book.

In the beginning of this book not much happened, which is what made me give it a three, because I didn't get into it in the beginning of the book. Towards the end of the book, like in the last 4 or 5 chapters is when I got into it more and wanted to finish reading it.

It's about a few girls that want to have a séance to see if they can contact spirits and ask them questions. Some thing is wrong though and Sara is the first to notice and screams it out, but then suddenly all the light go off and when the light come back on Sara is missing and all the doors are still locked but Sara is no where in the house. Then soon Sara's body is found and she's dead, and pretty soon another girl from the séance is found missing. She is then soon found out to be dead. Is Lauren the next one to be killed? Better read this book to find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tiwisted ending, Insane Town, Mysterious Characters, February 14, 2005
This review is from: The Seance (Laurel-Leaf Suspense Fiction) (Paperback)
Suspense, fear, and wonder are what you get by reading The Séance by Lois Lowery Nixon. This mystery books has to do with a bunch of senior girls who go to this other girls home looking for a little fun, which ends with a night with the sheriff. During The séance, her friend Sarah goes missing, even when all the doors and windows are locked. Then her body turns up in the Thicket a few days later send Lauren and her friends into a frenzy of fear.
Suspense of a book leaves you on the edge of your seat. In this book there were many times when after you finished reading a chapter you wanted to keep reading. For example, "Sara Martin," the sheriff said. "A hunter drove in from the Thicket a few minutes ago. He's got Sara's body in the back of his pickup!" This part made the story interesting in many ways, first because you think, how was Sarah killed? That keeps you wondering for the whole book until the end.
Another factor is fear, fear is one of the factors that makes a murder mystery very good. The fear of knowing that you don't know what is going to happen, that help a high standard of fear. One example was given by Sara Martin before she went missing was, "No!" Sara said. "There's something wrong here!" So then she began to shake, "There's something terrible! Don't you feel it?" This made the plot more gut wrenching and twisted.
One other factor is wonder, you always wondered what would happen next, that makes a story great, especially a murder mystery great. The stories plot put you into a question every time you read it. When you find out that Sarah has disappeared you sit there thinking, what has happened to Sara, especially when someone else at that séance goes missing as well. Would the sheriff figure it out or would they not find out at all until all the girls that were there are dead?
The Séance is filled with suspense, fear, and wonder, which keeps your nerves, twisted. My favorite part of this book is when you find out what really happened at the séance, that kind of gives you a bit of relief. There really wasn't any part in this piece of literature that I didn't enjoy, but the ending could have been changed just a little bit, I wont tell you how because I don't want to give it away. If you are a young adult of any age and enjoys a good mystery then this book suits you. It is filled with mystery, which intrigues that mind of young adults.

This is the first book I've read that is by Joan Lowery Nixon. She's a great author. In The Seance, a group of seventeen-year-old's are going to hold a seance. One girl strangely disappears during the seance and is found dead - murdered - in the Thicket. When another girl from the seance is found murdered, Lauren is afraid that she's next.
