The Search for Eggplantis, or...Glam on the Half Shell

The long awaited, much-anticipated third CD from Brooklyn-based Kenny Young and the Eggplants is, not surprisingly, another collection of clever, fun and, at times, pretty songs that will fit comfortably into the band's canon.

The signature Eggplant sense of humor is in evidence (you can't not love the idea of the movie-directing badger in "Badger in the Badlands," especially one that can win an award in the category of Best Film Made by a Badger or Hedgehog), as is the stellar songwriting (notably in the nimble yet affecting take on long-distance relationships, "186,000 Miles a Second") and performances.

The band also demonstrates its knack of choosing and reinventing interesting covers (in this case, Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love"), and what Eggplant CD would be complete without an ode to the eponymous veggie itself? (This one has TWO, "The Search for Eggplantis" and "When It's Sleepy Time in Eggplantis.")

There is also no shortage of intelligent wildlife (in addition to the cinematically inclined badger), including tales of a "Space Frog," a worm's life and a "Chapel Under the Sea."

But what stands out about this disc is the beefed up arrangements and the fleshed out production, the effect of which is to give the band's performances and songs more heft.

If you are an Eggplant fan, "The Search for Eggplantis ..." is a must have for your collection. If you are not familiar with the Eggplants ... What are you waiting for? Pick up this disc (as well as their first two efforts) and join the party.

Kenny Young and the Eggplants have a unique fun sound which causes young, old and in-between to smile. You will find youself humming these catchy tunes immediately. Try it you'll like it.
